I didnt even think about the fact that he hasnt really gotten out of the PCM break in tune. Lots of members have reported around 5-6k miles the truck really feels like it wakes up and grows some *****.

I record my mileage the "old fashion way" b.c i dont have a fancy on board computer calculator. Allthough it would be interesting to compare the two numbers, the auto one, and the one done the "old way"

"Maybe its the ones claiming 18mpg and above that are not being honest."

Ya think?

Probably more like they're not being consistent with the way they calculate. Or maybe just this one time everything fell into place. Like it was all downhill.

Consistent calculation over the course of say, 10 tank fulls, then the average would most likely put them on par with the rest of us. I can believe 1 or 2 mpg per gallon increase with certain mods or they way one drives could be a benefit, but 4+, or more?

But then, I'm a highly skeptical cynic about a lot of things.

Hey Bubba, how's the weather up north?

My last trip i filled up three different times, and got
19.33 MPG ~ 207.3 miles all highway some two lane passes
18.83 MPG ~ 282.3 miles mostly highway made some passes, a little bit of city driving
19.982 MPG ~ 68.2 miles all highway, maybe one pass

Speeds varried from 65-75 and most of the time was closer to 75... And of course there were a few times passing that i pushed 90+

I did a total of 557.9 miles, I spent $83.03 on gas (2.89, 2.81, 2.83). which means i averaged 19.154 mpg over the whole trip

you see i got 19.98 mpg on one of my legs, but that doesnt mean my whole trip was that good of gas mileage. and my previous record was an average of 19.2 mpg on a 400 mile trip

Edit, stock gears, stock tire size, stock tuning, so none of those can be considered to cause errors

Sir Patrick, ya da man. Nice numbers.

2x4 with a 4.6 could be the reason?

4X4 with 5.4 won't hit those numbers. Truthfully.

In my particular case, it was closer to 10,000 miles before the truck felt "broken in." However, I track all of my gas consumption on a spreadsheet, and there has been a definite upward trend in my gas mileage as the odometer has clicked forward.

Regarding the differences between the Edge's stated AMPG and the hand-calculated MPG, I've found that the Edge is closer to the hand-calculated MPG when the last 30 or so miles you drive are representative of your average driving conditions. (For the record, I still rely on the hand calculations.) I'll try to explain why:

I've noticed the Edge appears to hold only a finite amount of data when it calculates AMPG (due to random access memory limitations in the device, most likely), and it discards older MPG data in favor of newer MPG data. Consequently, in my experience, if the last several miles you drive on a tank of gas tend to differ greatly from your average driving conditions (e.g., you drive mostly in the city but take a highway drive just before filling up), the Edge's readings will be off from the hand calculations since more of the data currently in memory is due to the highway drive. However, if your driving conditions are fairly consistent between fillups, I've found the Edge to be accurate within +-0.5 MPG. Not too bad.

BTW, in case anyone is wondering, I'm running the latest (stable) updates on my Edge.

yea 4.6 definetly is a good thing in this case. But honestly the biggest mpg gain s ive seen from mods were the recent efan mod, and honestly lowering really helped me out. There was a thread running around maybe 5-6 months ago called "do lowered trucks get better gas mileage" or something to that effect. I noticed between a .5- 1.0 gain in the city with the same driving habits, and i didnt do enough data logging prior to lowering for highway driving, but im sure its close to same numbers.

Well, I'm not into lowering a 4x4. Not interested in lifting it, either.

E-fans? Don't trust 'em with how I use my truck. They're not for me.

But hey, for those compelled to squeeze out as much hp and/or mpg they can, ride the razor's edge, baby. I just hope ya don't get cut.

yea i made my own so im pretty confident in the setup. And as long as you are going 30-35 + you dont even need to have a fan at all

I bought the edge for performance reasons, but also had my hopes up that it would improve the mileage. I know gas mileage usually improves after a few months or having "x" amount of miles, but I have almost 8K. The owners manual says I should see an improvement around 4k-5k.

I will track it again and see what happens. I think my highway should improve when I lift it with 35's, because of the taller tire, but on the other hand it will get worse around town from taking off with larger tires.

No. Your highway mileage will also suffer - the truck is already a brick; a lifted brick is even more of a 'barn door' clone. Taller tire - you will need to compensate for in the tune anyway, to keep the speedo & shift points correct so I don't follow your logic on that - still a sail @ speed.

I am not saying it will improve drastically, but should very little. The truck will be turning lower RPM's when a taller tire is put on. The effort to keep the truck at a certain speed on the freeway with 32" tires to 35" tires should be minimal.

OK. sorry - you said lift - I misunderstood - it's just adding bigger tires, right? No suspension lift as well? Remember - slower engine speeds + greater aero deficiency could result in more downshifting as load increases, as you will be a little farther from the powerband. Could be a wash, actually.

Hey, Joey !

Just for more numbers for people to consider.

With only a 2.5" AS leveling kit and Fram Boost2 intake on my 2004 5.4 4x4 I get right around 15 MPG on my normal drive which is 80% city driving.

Has been pretty consistent there the entire year I have owned the truck with my low being close to 13 mpg and my best tanks being up around 16 mpg.

I always just do some quick math at the pump and try to get a ballpark figure with how I am doing.

I did say lift..... but you are probably right, it will be a wash. It is one of those things that I will have to wait and see. It just seems as stock it is low. Maybe a couple for thousand miles and it will improve a little. One can only hope.
