If it were me I would go with the Superchips tuner. I've heard that they Edge is really good but I have also heard alot of problems that come along with it. A buddy of mine is running the Flashpaq in his truck and its running great.

For a bit more ( actually, less than the Edge right now) you can get into a custom tuned Xcal2 from Troyer Performance. Far better than any of the others, if you want the best tuning for your truck. If you don't want / care about the best, get either of the other two.

Your choice - your call. Spend some qualit time searching here for more info.

Yup - an awesome but 'canned' tune... not to be confused in any way with true full 7 digit strategy matched custom tuning.

For performance, you are paying for tuning, not gauges. You can always add discrete gauges for the critical stuff anyway.

This one's for Thump the Grump!

This may be off topic or belong in another thread, but what is the difference between the custom tunes you can create on the Edge Evo vs. the custom tunes you have to wait for from Troyer?

I'm just trying to find the best way to tune my truck to handle the 35s...

Edge Evo over the superchips.Otherwise I'd go with Mike Troyer's tuning package. I like the guage options on Edge. Maybe MSD will get the bugs out of their new product soon.

I did some calling around yesterday regarding both of these for my new '07 5.4L and one of the local shops told me that MSD owns both Superchips and Edge?

Of the 4 places I called, I got one saying the Edge, one saying Superchips and 2 said they were virtually the same. The one place said they push the Edge pretty exclusively and when I mentioned that their are issues with 07 5.4/4.6L gas engines, he was oblivious to it, said that he deals mostly with Diesel engines. I asked about shift points and he said that they do change them and something about letting off the gas so it wasn't so hard on my transmission?

The other shop that pushed the Flashpaq said that they've had so many problems with the Edge that they won't recommend it at all. When questioned further as to what type of problems, they said anything from missing problems to having to be towed to them to replace it. He said they've warranted over 300 of them since they started offering them. When I indentified myself (I happened to have met the tech the weekend before when he was installing some Air Bags on my truck), he further explained that they've had almost zero problems with the Flashpaq's.

Ironically I visited the Flashpaq forums this morning and according to those, they still don't have support for Cold Air Intakes that can be downloaded, you have to send in your Tuner and they can program it for you at their shop. Meaning that if you have one installed and put in a flashpaq, you are actually losing a little of your low end power. It's recommended that you just keep your OEM intake on unless you send your unit in for programming. Their currently working on upgrading the Firmware on these units so that it can be downloaded from the Internet/their site instead of sending it in.

I like the options that the Edge offers over the Superchips (Display, on the fly tuning, etc), but it seems that perhaps they have a variety of problems, especially with newer trucks. Perhaps it's the amount of options that is the issue and inexperienced people are messing around with their tuners to the point that they are messing up their trucks?

I'm still on the fence personally, if I had to decide right now, I'd go with Flashpaq, but I'll wait a bit and see what the Edge programmers come up with.

Hi.

What are you gonna be paying for a FlashPaq? You may want to consider an XCal2 at this point.

Any new product be it Edge, FalshPaqs and even the new SCT LiveWire will have the 'version 1.0' jitters, or the 'trots' .

Its the reality of an agressive market, where accelerated product intros, compressed design cycles, and capturing 'mindshare' sometimes results in a half-baked initial release. Unfortunate but true - and likely not to change.

BTW - the Edge units for gas engines are not 'on-the-fly'. You must turn off the truck & reflash the PCM - it's the same for all flash devices in gas trucks.

Cheers
bubba

Well I've read so many bad things about the edge tuners, that I'm gonna sell mine on eBay after having it only a week... I do like the fact that it caught the error code for my PATS acting funky and making my remote start work only when it wants to, but that isn't really enoug to keep me satisfied with the product. Especially when the lead tuner/programmer at edge just left the company, and since Edge, Superchips, and RacePak are all owned by MSD Ignition and there support sucks I'll be ordering my Xcal2 next week.

The pod shipped with the Evo is prettty lame since it doesn't match the Lariat trim even if you paint it, and the guages are cool to have, but not enough to keep me from worrying about ***king up my truck due to having a canned tune that may or may not sync with my vehicle.

I have yett to hear a single negative (besides the wait time) about the TP Tunes so I guess that's the way to go...

I'm not looking to get the most HP out of the truck, just want the 35s to roll without screwing up the gears and to avoid speeding tickets from an incorrect Speedo.

And as far as what stores have recommeded, nobody recommeded the evo to me, I just thought it was cool with the guages. Everyone I spke with told me to go with the superchip... They're the same thing just a different case made by the same manufacturer with the same chitty customer support.

HI nxtlvl,

I appreciated your post & how you feel - and we thank you for your support.

We will get your tunes done just as quickly as possible - we are starting to get a bit more caught up now - we really got blind-sided by the demand for our Roush supercharge turn-key packages once we did the project truck for Roush, and that really put us behind.

Another thing that affected this was that Edge finally started enforcing their MAP pricing, which means now you can get our far more thorough Troyer Performance custom tunes for significantly less than what yo have to pay for the Edge units, so between that and the many vehicle projects we got hit with all at once, it really knocked us back a bit!

We have got all of the Roush trucks done now (well, we're back to our more usual demand of virtually always having at least one in the shop, but no more 4-6 of them lined up as fast as we can do them) by bringing in some additional help, so now that the Roush backlog has been dealt with, I can spend more time tuning - and as you may have seen here in some of the newer posts, a lot of tunes are rolling out of here right now.

At any rate, just wanted to thank you for your post, & we'll get your tunes done just as quick as is reasonably possible.

Good luck with your truck!
