Tuning a truck with 200K

I have a 2001 f150 with the 5.4 it has almost 200,000 miles and I was wondering if reprograming would it lead to alot of problems.

There is likely no definite answer. You know that engine while not dead, certainly could be nearing the end of its useful life. Has it had meticulous maintaining? How much oil does it burn? I'm certain you should discuss this with Mr. Troyer and get his two cents. I would think he would have to be convinced that powertrain was healthy before he tuned it just to avoid trouble and hard feelings later.

Good luck

Hi True,

This is a common question, and here's the simple answer - with 200K miles, it's a matter of how you would treat it after we tuned it.

In other words, if you start driving a truck with high miles on it like a race car after we tune it, then yes, that could potentially cause problems.

However, also keep in mind that the raw power gains form tuning alone are not enough to inherently "hurt" one of these vehicles, as these trucks have a significant amount of "over-engineering" in them, to make them tough and be able to stand up to the abuse that some of them get subjected to.

SO what's the bottom line? As long as that engine is basically healthy and at 200K miles, is not using more than 1 quart of oil between oil changes (which should be done every 3000 miles), and your other maintenance is up to snuff, then it's OK to tune it.

SO in other words,s make sure the spark plugs do not have 100K miles on them, that's too much - also, make sure the front (sometimes called "upstream" pair of O2 sensors do not have much more than about 50K miles on them - and they are cheap to replace just buy the Bosch name-brand units at AutoZone, they are much cheaper there than at any dealership. Also, the one other thing I would mention is that you don't want to start "hot-rodding' an automatic transmission with 200K miles on it that has not seen it's normal routine maintenance in terms of fluid & filter changes - again, just normal, routine maintenance.

So that's it - as long as the truck is not using a lot of oil, and your maintenance is up to snuff, then yes, it can be tuned.

Now when you call here, we tell our staff to bring to my attention anyone with about 140K or more miles with an automatic transmission - so they may ask you about that, but as long as we feel it's had the maintenance, we'll tune it for you - if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below, OK?

Thanks for your post & good luck!
