Use xcal II

I have a guy who wants to sell his xcalII which he purchased for his 98 F150.
My question is will this unit work with my 06 5.4 3V, and if so what do I need to do to get the right tunes for my truck?

Nope, two different units. You should offer to sell it for him, and then PM me! LOL.--DIY

He's got it on ebay right now with 2 hours left on the auction. He said he used it for about 10 mins and put it back in the box. The price is at $50.00, could be an excellent opportunity for you.

Was something wrong with it, or did he just not like it?

You know, now that I think of it, I'm not positive the X Cal II wouldn't work on your truck. You might have to get someone (Troyer) to build you some tunes, since it was set up for a '98 but it might just work. I know the Edge is two different units, but the X Cal might not be different. I sincerely apologise if I'm mistaken.--DIY

Yeah, I know it's advertised as working on all '96 and newer FoMoCo OBD II vehicles, but I can't say whether it is the exact same unit or whether they differ in the programming. That'd be a real steal if it would work for you. The Troyer Performance website says that the computer code is needed to order the item. Not sure if that's for the basic unit or just due to the custom tunes. --DIY

Looks like it's the same unit to me, from what I can find. You might have to have it re-programmed however because all the listings I'm finding are asking for a computer code number. Worst case scenario you buy the thing then pay Troyer Performance to come up with a custom tune for you and they'll e-mail it to you. I stand corrected. Sorry for the confusion on my part.--DIY

Yup - same unit - 1996 & up - period.

Good price - IF it's unlocked... you can get custom tunes from TP - call them for pricing.

good luck.

Hello mt b8,

The reality is that yes, that unit WILL work on *any* 1996-2007 FoMoCo vehicle.

All that needs to happen is to have us make a new set of tunes for your vehicle, which we can easily do and email them to you so that you'll be up & running.

The only risk in this is to make sure that the unit arrives "unlocked" - meaning that the previous owner has in fact returned his vehicle back to stock as if he hasn't, then the unit would have to be sent in to be unlocked, and there is a significant fee to do that, making it a bad deal.

So as long as it is actually unlocked, and you can get it at a good price, then you *might* be able to end up with a bargain. Just keep in mind that it needs to be pretty cheap because you will still need to pay to have new tunes done.

What I suggest is that you call us, and weight the cost of that tuner plus the price of having new tunes done for your truck and not having any warranty on that unit, versus the cost of us purchasing a new XCalibrator 2 from us so that you have a full warranty, as well as our famous Troyer Performance custom tuning.

We usually warn people against buying used unit on EBay, as you have no protection - we usually tell people if they are going to buy used, buy it from a fellow F-150 Online member who is advertising it here in the F-150 Online classified ads - that way, you generally tend to have better luck, and if they screw you, they get exposed here in front of everyone.

The bottom lien is to weight the actual costs between getting that used unit and paying us to do the new tunes for your truck, versus just buying a new unit from us so that you have full warranty and get the latest version, which now includes a backlit screen, and twice the memory on board, etc.

I see from your post that it's already over $100, and at that point, with what you have to pay for new tunes, and the fact that yo have no warranty, it's not worthwhile, so I'm just responding to give you & anyone else relevant info in general.

I hope that brief info helps, and please feel free to call us at our number listed below if you would like to go over any of this in further detail, OK?

Good luck!
