Used Edge or not?

One week ago I finally found out what the heck these tuners are all about from this forum. Thanks all, interesting reading.

I am curious to hear your thoughts on used equipment such as a used edge. I've seen some considerably cheaper and figured what the heck, that would just be more $ to get some custom tunes made. Can you have a used edge "refreshed" lets say, like from TP? Appreciate your input.

Best

The edge is a one time purchase. No purchasing of new tunes. There are MANY combinations to "customize" the tuning but you make those changes yourself. The custom tunes that you have seen on this forum are usually refering to an SCT tuner, most run an XCal2. Those are the tuners that you can pay someone to set-up and e-mail custom tailored tunes to load and run.

The only thing that you need to watch out for when buying a used tuner is that the seller "un-installed" it and returned their vehicle back to stock. This is because once the tuner has been "installed" it is "locked" to that vehicle.

Hope this helped clear up some of the confusion.

The biggest downside would be if it didn’t work correctly. Try it first; make sure it’s unlocked and works properly, then, if the price is right, go for it

I bought mine used off ebay. First thing I did when I got it was update it and for whatever reason I had a problem during the update and my Edge got stuck in "Run" mode which rendered it useless. I believe this error occurred because of my computer and not a fault of the seller. The point is, I called Edge and they were able to reinstall the updated firmware and calibrations over the internet. Cost me ~20 minutes but the unit was essentially brand new at that point. Edge has been problem-free since. I think if you had some problems, Edge customer service would take care of you.
