gas types with edge tuner

I've done alot of reading on here about the edge tuner, and constantly see people say they use "x" level on "x" octane gas. Whats the deal? Someone please explain the different levels of the edge tuner and the recommended fuel needed to be used. And if regular fuel could be used with it. I would like to get one, but not if I have to buy premium fuel to feel the power. thanks

There are 3 levels on the EDGE

level 1 trans only, only improves trans function, requires 87 octane min.

level 2 towing, maximizes low end TQ for towing, req 87 octane min.

level 3 performance, maximizes mid range and top end power, req 91 octane.

You can alter the timing up or down to tailor any level to the octane you are using. A good rule of thumb is 1 degree of timing for every two points in octane.

ex. level 2 with 93 octane- you can add +3 degrees of timing
level 3 with 93 octane- add +1 degree
level 3 on 87 subtract -2 degrees

This is a very good, concise explanation. Unless they have changed their site, you can go to Edge's site and download or print a copy of the manual. It explains most questions pretty well.

So in other words, you can use all 3 settings with 87 octane but performance gains would not be as much in comparison to using a higher octane fuel?

The main reasons I want one is for the monitor capabilities, hopefully some better mpg and some more power. It seems that level 2 with 87 octane gas yeilds the best mpg and good power increases. With a 50 mile one way commute any mpg is welcome, and being able to increase power when wanted is even better.

Level 2 is better for stop and go, more low end torque. Level 3 is better at higher rpms and I use it for trips, wher I may need to pass running at higher speeds. One other thing. I get an improvement of over 1 mpg running level 3with 93 as opposed to level 2 with 87, so it more than pays the .20 per gallon difference in cost.

It won't hurt anything but you would better performance from the gas by bumping the timing +1.0. The timing is set for 87 and you are running 89, so get the benefit from it.

ok so all this timing stuff....................Isn't the main reason for problems with tuners is user error right? I'm sure the manual tells you how to change your timing settings, but does it tell you which changes do what? Like does it tell you that if you are gonna run level 2 on 87 octane then to set time to whatever, or make such and such changes?

Sounds good. I just wanted to make sure that it won't hurt anything. The only reason that I run 89 is that in IA it is 10% ethonal and it is about $.10 cheaper a gallon. Since user errors are the problem I think I will leave it where it is. As long as there are no problems then I am happy. I am VERY happy with the performance already.
