Superchips 1715, is it right for me?

Hows it going, well I no nothing about chips and programmers, but i looked up and for my 1998 f150 5.4 it says to go with the superchips 1715 max microtuner. Is this right? also I didnt want to spend 400 bucks on it so i looked at ebay and found one in the auction ending today its at 177 right now. I wanted to know if they are used do they not wok as well or does the life of the programmer never change? It is unlocked, and says it was used once, instaled and then later removed. Does this sound like a god deal? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

There are several sites selling used tuners on EBay. I purchased my Superchips from www.autoanything.com for $299 with free shipping a couple of weeks ago.

wandell how do you like your superchips? im currently bouncing back and forth between troyer tunes and the superchips 1715 since you can ebay one fairly cheap..i just dont wanna spend money and be dissappointed with the results..are the custom tunes from troyer going to give me a major increase in performance over the superchips? b/c if its only going to be a minimal increases over the superchips performance then i will just go with the better priced option

I'm using the 87 octane option on my Superchips. There is a little increase in performance, but not a lot.

I had a Superchips 1715 on my truck and it sucked. The only good thing it did was correct the speedo for tire size and firm up the shifts, but not nearly enough. I love my Edge Evo that I've got now.

I have the 1715 on my truck and it works great. I am currently running the 87 octane program and it is definitely better than stock. The high octane program is even better but I switched when gas prices went through the roof and haven't gone back yet.
I may sell it and go with an XCAL for a real custom program this year.

i have a superchips and the 87 tune gives a bit more power but the big diff is on 91 tune. costs more but my mpg went up to more than offset price. nice power increase and crispness in shifts/throttle response

Hi south_ms_sprcru (and all),

the Superchips 1715 unit works well - however, our custom tuning gives anywhere from double to as much as triple the raw power gains, so it is definitely worth going with over *any* canned off the shelf type of tuner.

We go much further in depth into the PCM, altering many hundreds of parameters that off the shelf tuners never touch - it's simply the difference between something designed for mas merchandising versus what we do, which is in-depth personal custom tuning for each individual vehicle.

Because we have specialized in tuning the F-150 for 15+ years, we are well known for getting better results, and this is why so many people run our Troyer Performance custom tuning here - so yes, it will give you quite a bit more than the Superchips 1715 or any other off the shelf tuning device will deliver, just FYI.

And by the way - we carry all of those products, too - the Superchips 1715, the Edge, etc., so we know them all very well.

If you would like to go over any of this in more detail so you can be fully informed and then make your decision, please feel free to call us & we'll be happy to help.

Thanks for your post & good luck!

I've read many of your responses and am curious of what your "custom tune" product adds to rear wheel hp on the 5.4 on an otherwise stock truck. I would then like to see what a canned off the shelf does and maybe also see the dyno curves.

This would help people like me to see the difference and may help you move more of those units. I have to believe you have this info somewhere. So what do you say???

We do not have any problem "moving more units" - we are the best known Ford F-series tuner in the world bar none, and we custom tune more F-150's than anyone else, period. It's what we have specialized in for 15+ years, and we're very well known for it.

I do not personally post dyno plots, because years ago when we used to do that, we immediately got swamped with everybody and their brother wanting this plot, that plot, and it got out of hand every time, right away. It ended up where I would have to have had a staff of 20 people just to maintain all the paperwork and post all the plots being demanded - so I do not do that. Additionally, only those who know absolutely nothing about dynos, techniques, or these trucks would ever make any decision based of of a dyno plot - there is far too much variance from one vehicle to the next (especially in these trucks), different manufacturers use different dynos which can vary readings by as much as 40 HP, they use different techniques, etc., and overall, it's just far too easy to get data that is basically worthless - and nobody who actually knows dynos and how to properly interpret dyno plots or who knows these vehicles would ever be swayed by some dyno plot - far too many people think dynos are some mythically accurate machine and that the highest peak number wins - and that is simply dead wrong.

If you want dyno plots from off the shelf products, then call those manufacturers directly and see if they want to distribute them.

If you want a dyno plot for *my* custom tuning, then you order the tuning from us for your vehicle and once you get the tuning and it's finalized, put your vehicle on the dyno and see what you have. Or simply spend a few minute here reading to see any of the *many* dyno plots posted by our customers.

Or better yet, come here to one of our public dyno days, so you can see what your truck makes compared to numerous other vehicles, just as hundreds of others here have done - in fact, we have another dyno day coming up the last weekend of this month!
