xcal with a 4.6 what will it do
i have a 2001 f150 4x4 supercab with the 4.6. it is all stock. what kind of gains will the xcal do for me. is it worth it on a 4.6. anyone have a 4.6 with the xcal.will my transmission still shift smooth?
I had the xcal2 on my 2002 F-150 4.6L and unlike the majority hear I didn't really notice a big difference. I'm not saying I didn't gain a good amount of hp/tq but I just couldn't tell by the seat of the pants. I already had the FTVB so my shifts were firm and not sloppy already. That being said I have on order new tunes for my new truck and an AF1 intake. Since your truck is stock I think you would really enjoy the shifting changes that the tuner will provide you along with the performance improvements. I would just say don't expect to feel a night and day difference as far as seat of you pants...

Hi chrism9232,
On the 4.6 F-150's the power gains generally run anywhere from 16-23 HP, depending on what octane we tune it for - the higher the octane, the more power gain, but even on 87 it gets good gains.
However, one thing that far too many people overlook is the actual net effect on the *performance* of the vehicle - everyone gets hung up on power numbers, but that is actually one of the smallest parts of improving performance in these vehicles. Yes, more HP & TQ is certainly desired and delivered by us, but you also get many other improvements that make far more difference in the performance than what a 20 Hp gain (just for example) would ever indicate on paper in a 2.5-3-ton truck.
In other words, there are *many* areas in the PCM's program that affect performance in addition to raw engine power - how it is delivered, when it gets delivered, how long it takes to ramp up, the powertrain's response time, and so many other factors end up to deliver a product that gives more performance improvement than any other type of modification that would add the same amount of peak HP.
The bottom line is, our Troyer Performance custom tuning is the single best bang for the buck performance enhancement you can make to these vehicles, and nothing else will improve overall performance by as much or more for the same or less cost.
I hope that helps to give you some perspective on this, & please feel free to give us a call if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, OK?
Thanks for your post, & good luck with your truck!
