I recently bought an immaculate 1999 F150 Supercab (2WD) 4.2L, 5-speed with only 36,000 miles on it. I've already got 20" rims and a few other things for it, but I'm looking for some performance mods.

I put a K&N FIPK on my wife's Trailblazer and LOVE it, so that will be my first addition. The problem is, I'd like to do a few more things to this truck (headers and exhaust), but I can't find a chip or programmer for this year with the 4.2L V6... Does anyone make one?!?

I've spent the last few hours Googling and searching these forums, but so far I haven't uncovered anything. Am I just SOL?

No, you are NOT out of luck, my friend. We have tuned hundreds upon hundreds of those 4.2 V6 F-150's, so we can easily help you out on this.

Hey mike, I have been impressed with the rave reviews your tuning gets so i have been interested in getting an xcal2, I also have a 4.2 and am getting an exhaust an have intake, but im going to lift about 3 inches and put 33's on. Which will be better for me to get the power back I will lose, xcal2 or gears. If gears I was thinking 4.10.

 

AS long as you are at about 33 inches of shorter, I advise doing the tuning first, as you are going to need that anyway - even a lot of guys with 35's use our tuning and don't' do gears, though with 35's I personally like to see *both* tuning and gears.

So the 3.55 will work fine. With the exhaust high flow cats and intake, what would i be looking at in improvments. I know you improve shifting but I was wondering if you had any numbers or remembered any numbers off a tuned 4.2.

 

How much is really gained out of the 4.2 with your tunes.

 

That depends on many factors, including the vehicle's condition, it's maintenance, the type of tune done, the octane level we are tuning for, the vehicle's PCM revision, etc., so there is no one set number - so keep in mind that anyone claiming one set number from tuning doesn't know the first thing about tuning, especially F-150's, and 4.2 V6's in particular! Some of them can go open loop, but many can't, and that is a significant factor in and of itself!

Tuning gains can be anywhere from about 20 to 25+ HP, it depends on the factors I listed above - some have gained over 30 HP - ther aer far too many variales & details to go over here by typing. The bottom line is, our tuning is the single best bang for the buck performance enhancement you can make to that truck, as nothing else for the same or less cost will improve performance as much.
