Question Programmer selection and Gear I Should get

Hello, I have an 05 f-150 supercrew with 5.4 3v, with and AFE intake and flowmaster 40 series muffler(muffler only, stock pipe size) and I was wondering what programmer I should get for my truck. It is a cross between the edge evo and the xcal2, but which one would be better for my truck, honestly?

Also I was wondering which gears should I getm for my truck? I have 35 inch tires with 3.55 gears, I heard 4.11 were the best for freeway, but I have also heard that 4.56 gears will work just as fine on the freeway and be faster on take off, I drive on the freeway alot so which gears would be the best choice?

The Edge Evolution is a great product for the 04-06 model years. It's very user friendly. The price is a bargan also.

I recommend the XCal2 with TP’s custom tunes; it’s been the best bang for the buck performance I’ve done, made my truck fun to drive

I am running 4.10s with basically stock tires (245 70R16) and love the extra torque multiplication. You, obviously, have way more wheel than I do. In my opinion the 4.10 ratio is not near enough for your application.

I agree with jpdadeo - the additional cost for Troyer custom is money well spent. I'd go with custom tuning first and discuss your gear ratio change with Mr. Troyer, then decide if you still want to pay for the gear change. I have a 2wd, so the cost wasn't such a factor as for those of you with 4wd.

Hi F150God4Ever5.4,

You ask a number of questions, so let's address them once by one.

First - in terms of which tuner to go with, it's a matter of what you are looking for - if you just want *some* improvement and don't care about getting the best driveability or the best performance & power gains, then you can use an off the shelf type of device like the Edge - we carry them in stock as well, and will meet or beat any legitimate dealer's price on them.

However, most people, especially with these heavy trucks, are really concerned with getting the best *results* - and for that, you'd want to go with or Troyer Performance tuning loaded into the XCalibrator 2 - you will get significantly more performance improvement, better driveability, better shift characteristics, and a far more thorough tune, because it's *custom* tuned - it's not "canned" - meaning the same tunes for everyone like the off the shelf types of devices all deliver - when we do our tuning, we do a set of 3 custom tunes set up for the needs & preferences of each individual vehicle owner - and we go into far more depth in the PCM's programming. In fact, we have done tuning for a couple of major manufacturers and are just now in the process of negotiating with another chipmaker to do some tuning for them on these vehicles - this is due to our expertise, as we have specialized in this platform for 15 years now, far longer than anyone else, and are well known for our results.

Now one thing to give thought to is that if you want our custom tuning, that takes a few weeks to get done for you - but we also do not charge your credit card until we are actually shipping your product, and you get a much better tune that will really wake up your truck. You can see the many people here who use our product, and they tend to rave about it - but then this is what we do, specialize in Ford F-series performance.

Now with regard as to what would be a better gear ratio, I agree with another poster in that I would suggest using 4.56 gearing instead of 4.10's when using 35" tires. Even if most of your driving is highway, you need the additional torque multiplication to offset the taller tires, as well as the significant additional weight of that unsprung mass, which dramatically reduces the amount of power that actually gets to the ground - so for 35's, go with 4.56 gears in our advice.
