Low performer 5.4 3V

Anyone disappointed with the stock performance of the 5.4 3V motor? I have an 05 F-150 King Ranch 4x4 and have always been very disappointed with the performance. I have a 1999 Expedition with the 5.4 2V (128,000 miles) and it is a far better performer... all kinds of torque, passing power... just an all around better performer. The F-150 is so sluggish - feels like it can't get out of its own way. If I stab the gas, it takes a good 2 seconds to figure out what I have done (thanks drive by wire) and then downshift. When cruising on the freeway, it always feels the need to downshift going up any slight grade or giving some gas to pass. I thought this new motor was supposed to be better than the 2V... so far, I think it sucks. 15,000 miles and a Magnaflow exhaust have done nothing to open this thing up. I went and drove a 2007 Expedition (5.4) to see what its power level was and was disappointed in it too. It had more torque, but still not what I thought it was going to be. Again, driving on the freeway, it was dropping out of OD on slight grades or even just passing. I know a chip would help, but I also think it should have come from the factory better than this.
Mike / Marc - Do you think my truck may have some mechanical issue, or are they all like this?
At this point, I am ready to just get rid of it and get a Trailblazer SS!

amen brother, youre preaching to the choir in here....its not an issue with your truck in particular, they are all dogs stock. I have an 06 f150 HD edition with the 5.4 3v engine. It was a pokey pup. then i installed Troyer tuning, new intake and exhaust and pooyah(heheh) it came alive....the way it should be.

its the weight factor of 6K and the stock tune is horrible. Get a Aftermarket tune and you will feel the Beast wake up!

Cub Cadet - All that I can say is after attending the Dyno day at Troyer Performance is to give Mike Troyer a call. I think my truck was in a coma before I got my 3.5" Air Force One intake, SISO Magnaflow and Mike's tuning. I am really please with my 87 Performance tune. I have not even tried 93 Performance but after the results I got, I am thinking about spending that extra cash on gas to see what more I can get out of my 2004 Scab 5.4 3 valve.

The XCal2 with TP's custom tunes will fix all the power woes. It's been the best performance mod I've done; made my truck fun to drive

Hi fella's I have the same issue with my 04 FX4. I recently installed a 3" SISO Magnaflow system from the collector back and to be honest, not only did it not help it may have made it worse. Definately some loss on the bottom end. To make matters worse I have also gone to a stock size 10 ply tire. Rough guess, how much are we talking for performance tune and will I need to change the chip. Thanks, Bob

Even though this truck has more power with the 3v it weighs about 500 lbs more then the old body 2v. Did this for better front crash reliability.

Once the weekend is over this thread if probably going to get filled by people saying the 3v is a perfect motor for what I want etc. Its not really the motor thats bad- its a great motor however its underpowered for a truck that weighs this much etc.

A chip will greatly improve throttle responce etc.

Hey guys just from reading post on this site about tunes it really sounds like a new tune will work miracles for my slugish 06 5.4L. I was just wondering if the xcal2 is the best tunner and where to buy it? what is a acceptable price? All help is appreciated.

For Cub Cadet & BABA,

It's against the rules here for us to discuss any specific pricing - but your best bet is to take advantage of our Group Buy deal going on right now on our Troyer Performance custom tuning, as that is what will actually get the best results from your vehicle's tuning.

We have specialized in F-series tuning for far longer than anyone else, 15 years now - that is why you see so many people using us for their tuning & other F-series performance needs.

Our Group Buy ends when we close this coming Friday, so right now is the best time to take advantage of this deal - for pricing information, you can drop by the Group Buy section of these message boards, or you can give us a quick call at our number listed below & we'll be happy to get you all the info you need, answer any questions, etc.

Rest assured we can make your truck feel more responsive and enjoyable to drive.

Thanks for your post, & good luck!
