Unhappy EDGE Warning is for real-Got Stung

Decided to buy the EDGE tuner for my 2000 5.4L truck. I read all instructions several times and decided to go for it, following install to the letter. About half way through the process my tuner froze. I waited maybe 15 minutes to see if anything would happen.......... and nothing. The warning states "Do not attempt installation in an area where you might be stranded". Pay close attention to this!
Luckily I had just finished work for the day and was outside my business. Called and had my truck towed to local Ford dealer. Also called Discount Power Parts who I bought the EDGE from and, even after hours, Larry picked his phone (thank goodness) to comfort me and assure me he would ship another one if that's what I wanted. He said I was maybe the third person out of several hundred to have this problem-lucky me.
I'm not mad at anyone but myself as I inconvenienced my family and wasted precious time. Anyone else ever have this happen?

Thanks,
Will

So far, repair bill is at $350.00-ouch!! Stealer said the programming was more extensive than just a reflash-had to get something from Detroit and do it manually? Also had to reprogram ignition keys. Not sure if this stuff is true but I'm at their mercy-just where I don't want to be. Bottom line: If you're doing this for the first time, do it during regular business hours when you can call the manufacturer.

FX4, Have you known others to have these problems? I really thought I was buying something safe-well as safe as it can be.

You got taken. The reflash should not have been over about $90 including taking care of the Pats and all the keys..
The reflash is done right in the truck thru the access port and takes about 1/2 hr. It's serial data feed for a good sized program.
You have to be sure the tuner has you PCM code in it's program. Does your dealer know this?
The check for this is on the downloaded program information.
It's not enough to just use a model year and be sure.

My beta unit did the same thing. Unplugged it and the truck started and ran fine. My $$ says that you didn't need a reflash. Did you try calling Edge tech support before you had it towed to the dealer? I think the dealer screwed you.

I had that same problem when I first bought my edge tuner. Truck would no longer start no matter what I did. Called edge tech support and they walked me right thru fixing everything back to normal....and for free.

I have seen many complaints on this site and on other F150 forums it seems like all the bugs are not yet worked out, I cant bash edge cause I dont use it, but I see more complaints about that tuner than any other on the market.

Only because it is the newest out there. A search of this site shows similar compaints and problems with all of the other tuners over the years.

Yes my Superchips 9100 gave me a no start when a new tune was first installed. Called Mike Troyer and after he did a little research the problem was resolved via Email with in two hours. He sent me some new software and all was well, have downloaded many revisions to my tunes since then and never have had a problem. That's customer service!!!

My biggest mistake so far was attempting to install on Friday evening when Edge was not available to call. I'm sure they could have helped without me having to go to the dealer. Turns out, the breakdown of the repair was as follows:

Reprogram PCM and cut and program keys- $269.95
PATS key- $45.00
Towing- $86.25

Service manager said they had to get the "as built" data from Detroit and reprogram manually-not a simple reflash. Anyone have any experience with this term? Also, if I was overcharged, what would be my recourse and how would I prove anything?

Sent the edge tuner back to Discount Power Parts and asked for another-yes, I want to try it again. This time I'll call edge first and let them know what happened the first time. Also make sure they're ready for me to call if a problem arises.

Any other advice?

Major problem..... but due to my own stupidity. I was at the gas station getting gas and I only got a few dollar worth but I was getting regular instead of the premium I had been running so I was reprogramming the Edge for level 2 rather than level 3 that it was on. I started the programming promptly, but it was not done by the time the programmer was done. Some ******* in an old POS F-250 with no mufflers was like waiting for me to get out of the gas station so I went to start the truck, it crank a lot longer than normal and then finally started up and started smoking. Then I realized the tuner hadn't finished yet. F$@#!!!! The programmer froze and would not communicate. I left it sit for a few minutes to see if either the truck would fix itself or the tuner would wake up. Not lucky enough for either, so I limped the truck down to the dealership and left it there. They gave me the same crap that a lot of you guys have mentioned here, that the PCM isn't responding to the download of the program and they are going to have to enter it manually. And if it does not respond to that they might have to replace the PCM (THAT IS NOT HAPPENING! **** NO). I haven't had ANY problems with the edge before now, so I don't blame it on edge, however I think they should probably find a better way to prevent such an accident like this. So I'm not looking forward to the charges. They claim it's going to be the initial $148 charge plus at least two hours of labor at $74 an hour. I hate the ford dealership here, but they've got me by the ***** now. Any suggestions?

What's Up With You Guys!!!

This EDGE programmer is so easy to use. I just can not beleive the horror stories people are having. The problems people are describing relate to "Human Error" not the programmer.... READ the instructions, FOLLOW the instructions and you'll be very happy.

If you are having these problems with this simple device just wait for the new released SuperChips programmer... It functions exactly like the EDGE and will there be problems? You betcha BE
