Have custom tunes - question about TC lockup

I recently got my tunes from Troyer. I couldn't be happier about the performance improvement! It's simply outstanding. But I have a question about the way that the torque converter now locks... When under light acceleration (but STILL accelerating), at around 42mph while in OD, the TC locks up right away. The result is that the acceleration almost stops when the TC locks up. It almost feel like I let off the throttle. It wasn't anywhere as noticable with the stock tune... With my new tunes, it does it on both the performance and the tow tunes...

Is this pretty common with custom tunes? I know that Mike knows what he's doing, so I assume it's just the nature of the beast, and there's probably a benefit to it. I also know that I should really call him to discuss/confirm, and I will someday, but I'm so busy during the day that I can't seem to find time... So I thought I'd see what everyone else has to say about it, especially if you have tunes from Troyer.

One last thing: I know that I could simply turn off OD, but that seems to be a hassle, especially knowing that the stock tune is not noticable.

Depends on the tunes you chose as well. The second of my three tunes, which is a 93 street tune, tends to lockup at times I don't like and quite frequently, so I use the max performance tune all the time.

Talking

actually while just crfuising around town under light acceleration i like my converter to lock up as to keep the heat down in the trans. it should unlock during wot and heavy acceleration except prolly in OD. but then again it depends on what tunes you have and what you and mike or crew went over on the tunes. more than likely if it is a tow tune then the verter will lock for heat purposes.

Actually, I called TP today, and spoke to Neal... I explained what's going on, and he said it is behaving that way "by design", that's how it's intended to... BTW, this is on the 87 Performance tune (as well as the tow tunes)... He suggested I give it a few more drive-cycles to complete the adaptive strategy stuff, but said it probably won't change much.

well hay at least nothing is wrong. it may just be a little more noticeable due to the pressures in the trans being raised for performance.

Well, just as an update... This morning I called TP, and again spoke to Neal. I basically told him that I really couldn't stand the way it is right now, and that I was thinking of just going back to stock tune. He said to fix it, go into the adjustable parameters on the Xcal2, and tweak the 3-4 shift points. So I went into the adjustments, and the only thing having to do with shift points is "WOT SHIFT". I increased the 3-4 shift point by 3MPH (which is max)... It made absolutely no difference at all...

So later in the morning, I put another call into TP, but a lady said both Mike and Neal were not there. I left a message... I just called again, and they're already closed...

I don't know what to do... It really is irritating enough that I would go back to stock if it can't be adjusted...

Does anyone else know if the WOT shift points should address this concern, as Neal said?

I can get mine locked up a 40mph if I feather foot it but when I drive a little more aggressive it doesn’t lock up near as quick

I thought the same thing... So I loaded the 87 "performance" tune, and sure enough, same thing happens.

Yeah, if I drive more aggressive, then it doesn't do it... The problem is that I'm constantly driving in traffic, so I don't stomp on it.

I do notice what bamorris2 is talking about sometimes when I’m just chugging along in moderately heavy traffic, you know, speed up, slow down, speed up, slow down… (35 to 50mph range) That’s just the way it is when you’re rocking the rpm & load back and forth over top of the transmission shift point

Yeah, but why is it not noticeable with the stock tune?

Probably because with the stock tune the transmission is slipping a lot more to make the smooth shifts and the torque converter takes forever to lock up; that’s how I remember it driving before Mike’s tunes
