Got an Xcal what next?

Ok so this is probably in the wrong section but I kinda wanted to have mike see this since I know this is the most popular section for him. I got an Xcal from troyer about a year ago now and love it! best money Ive spent on my truck so far! anyway I was going to get rid of the F150 and go superduty, well long story short Im keeping the F150. My question is what are some good engine performance mods to get some more hp out of a basically stock engine. ITs a daily driver and I haul a light quad trailer buts thats about it. Im running 35s on stock 3.55 gears(yes I know it sucks, plan to regear soon) I already have a K&N fipk(came on the truck when I bought it) which Im concidering going with an airforce one since I need to replace the filter on mine anyway. I have some generic flowmaster on it when I bought as well, thinking of doing at least a cat back but I love the sound of it now so I would want to try and match that at least if I change it. any other ideas? oh and its a 99 5.4

Thanks for any help in advance. Also if a mod feels this needs to be elsewhere please move it.

If I were you, I'd just stick with the K&N intake and the flows. Switching would only net you a few extra horses and it just wouldn't be cost-effective. If you want more power, I'd suggest using the money you just saved on efans and maybe ud pullies. They free up a good bit of horsepower and improve throttle responce a good bit (so I hear).

I have thought about electric fans but I live in arizona and from what I have seen here electric fans just dont cut it during those 115-120* summers.

Sell that K&N and get you an AF1, I have attended a dyno day at Mikes shop and I have seen the power the AF1 make's over other intakes

Get a dual exhaust with a Flowmaster 40 series on it, and some E-Fans.

duel exhuast isnt benificial unless its a true duel system. duel pipes are useless. It must be duel all the way back, plus I dont think its worth the extra cash to mod the whole system for a truck application. stuff like mustangs yes but in a truck, no.

I perfer the single exit exhuast much better IMO

I'm pretty sure Troyer's fans as well as the FAL setup cool your engine better than the stock fan and they free up a lot of horsepower. Read about the tests they did here http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi...alogno=PPI-EFK.

Are the Af1's gains that much better than the K&N's that you can justify the $ spent on a brand new intake?

Well lets put it this way there was a guy at the dyno day that had a Volant intake and every other truck had an AF1 after all the trucks ran and he drove back home he decided to get the AF1 and sell the Volant

put in some 4.11's and call it good. If you keep your truck long enough for the stock fan to give up the ghost then get some e-fans--don't waste your money if your stock fan is working fine...

The 4.11 will make the biggest difference for you at this point..

I think Mike is an extrememly knowledgeable guy, and he has led me and many others down the right path. That being said, a couple of ponies isn't worth the cost associated with changing from the K&N to an AF1. I've never dynoed the difference between systems, nor do I plan to, but I have always bought the cheapest ebay knock offs, or even made my own intakes instead of blowing a couple hundred better spent elsewhere dollars on a brand name one. Hence the following pictures: I built that intake for an explorer from leftover intercooler piping from my navigator. I added a mustang MAF housing since the explorer unit was tiny. Total cost, $0. (I had the MAF from my mustang days.

Now, you take the money saved not burnt on AF1, get some efans and save up for a true dual exhaust, and then you can reap the benefits. But for the naysayers, what do I know, I just drive a blown Navigator

If troyers fan kit in that good then it might be an option. I am a beleiver on how the parasitic draw effects hp. I might also be interested in that kit for my 93 bronco to free up some hp as well. problem is I do alot of 4wheeling and air flow over the radator is someone of an issue. I have yet to see a e-fan setup work in that type of situation out here. Then again I have never seen troyers setup work either.

Troyer's efans are great and electric fans in general should do a better job when 4 wheeling. I did a lot of Rockcrawling which means lot's of idleing thus your coaster stock fan isn't turning that fast. Mike's efans are dual and one is basically turning all the time then you set the second one to kick on at a certain temp and between the two of them they are far more effecient that a stock coaster fan.

With that said, if you think that you're going to put these fans on and be able to melt rubber because of them only, you're mistaking. I did the underdrive pullies and the efans at the same time and noticed very little difference in the good ol butt dyno. On paper, I'm sure that the numbers were there, I don't doubt that, but I would suggest going with a gear change if you want to "notice" a difference. With 35's, the efans will not even be noticable.

I do mostly rock crawling as well and I have a good friend with the same year bronco that tryed to run e-fans, he couldnt keep it cool enough however his built his own setup using a duel speed fan out of a junk yard. It was fine on the street but offroad it just wouldnt cut it even if the fan was on high. maybe I can talk troyer into getting a setup for the early 90s trucks.

I dont expect e-fans to be a huge gain, Is the big picture that counts, several mods put together to get an overall gain. My goal with this thread was to get an idea of what everyone is doing and what troyer is offering. I will probably end up regearing it first then go from there.

good luck man...keep us posted on what you end up doing. By the way..the Troyer efans are really nice, and I'm not trying to discourage you from getting them by any means. If he made them for my Titan, I would have them again (I sold my F-150). They are very high quality and I definetly recommend them. Just trying to save you some money up front--if you want most noticable gains right now I believe that gears would be your best bet....
