How do these powertrains hold up!!!!

I have a bone stock 2006, f150, 4x4, supercrew. Just ordered a TP XCal 2. Which will arrive in the next few weeks. I not too infrequently run my vehicle at WOT. Sometimes from a stoplight, sometimes from cruising speed. What I wonder is how well can I expect this Ford Power train to hold up, both stock and with the Xcal 2? I never really hot rodded my old ford trucks very much. However, with this truck, I have been.

Also, it is my understanding that the TP Tunes will firm up the shifts. Less slop and slip I suppose. I have heard talk in the past that a firm shift is better for a tranny than a soft shift. Is this true and will the TP Tuner add to the expected life of the tranny or reduce it or neither. Does anyone know how many miles I can expect a stock tranny to hold up with moderate hot rodding? What about the engine, any stories of this 5.4, 3v engines letting go at wot if you do not exceed 5000 rpm??

HI Lakeport,

These are all good questions, and we've covered all of this in great detail many times before - use the SEARCH feature and you can look all of this up in *many*( previous posts of ours, for example.

To go over this briefly...........

First, the engines should deliver a normal 150K-200K mile service life with decent treatment and routine 3000 miles oil changes using Mobil 1 5W20 and a top quality oil filter. That also includes some hard use, but not driving it like a race car all the time, either. In other words, they are engineered as *trucks* and Ford knows their trucks see some tough use.

Now as for the transmissions - well, the 4R75E has only been around for 3 model years, and so far they are proving to be very reliable overall, including even with a supercharger installed.

As far as rpms, you can safely take the powertrain to 540 rpm no problem for the WOT upshift point, and the actual rev limiter, which you cannot hit unless you do something dumb like manually hold in in one gear and keep your foot to the floor until you finally reach it, a few hundred rpm higher. The weakest link is the torque converter, and as long as it is not revved over 5400-5500 rpm on a frequent basis, it is OK.

Doing a very minor mod like our tuning is not going to decrease your service life on any part of the powertrain - and firmer shifts *help* any automatic transmission by reducing slippage and the heat it generates - this is no way hurts the tranny, so don't worry about that.

Overall, you can stick your foot into it at the occasional "stoplight grand prix" and not hurt the vehicle, and still get a normal service ;life. Now if you frequently pound on it, then yes, you can potentially reduce the service life a bit, but from the sound of it, I don't think you';ll actually be doing that - I think your use tends to fall more into what you see most guys here doing, which is the normal daily driver use and occasionally getting on it - and maybe some towing once in a while - and for that kind of use, you can do our tuning and a number of other mods that are properly chosen, and still have a normal service life, generally speaking.

I hope this info helps a bit,

mobile 1?

Not to raise the great oil debate again but is Mobile 1 5w20 a fully syn. or a blend? I run the 5w20 motorcraft syn. blend with motorcraft filter and stay religious to 3,000 mile changes. Is this oil the same and does motorcraft qualify as a" top quality" filter?

Wow, Mikes responce defineltly makes me feel way better since i JUST ordered my Xcal2 today. The biggest concern is how the truck will hold up and if i will have any problems like you always hear about with the edge. Im really anxious now to get it and i feel it will be well worth the money spent...

BTW...i went with 87 tow, 91 tow, and 91 perf....

Hi.

I think you are okay.

Oil: M1 is a full syn. You can also use MC's two flavours, a semi & a full.

Filter: MC #FL820-S is fine, as is a K&N #HP-2010, or a Mobil 1 #M1-210.

These are 5.4L part numbers.

Cheers
Bubba

Hi.

The MC full syn is a 5w-30 - here's a link:

http://www.motorcraft.com/products.do?item=15

It's pricey around here ... for that reason (and not the fact that it's a 5w-30), I'd stick with the MC semi or the Mobil 1

Cheers
