question about Edge programmer

hey i have a 2002 F-150 with the 5.4, i was looking into purchasing an edge programmer, but do not want to have to buy 93 octane all the time, can you get noticable and worthwhile performance gains from it running on 87?

I have not seen much of a seat of the pants performance gain. You can tell a difference in shifting though.

The 87 octane on level two is good. However it cost like .20 cents more per gallonto run 93 octane. About $5 dollars. I run level 2 with 93 octane and some custom changes for that octane. I seem to get some better gas mileage but for the cost of premium its a wash.

can you drive around with the towing mode enabled for the better performance and mileage, or should you only use it for towing?

You can run level 2 all the time. It is what I used for thousands of miles on my 04 F150 FX4 and it is what I will use on my 06 F150 XLT once it gets broken in.

I have pretty much settled on running level 2 with 87. I get a slight ping over 5000rpm (just before it shifts) if I'm on it hard, but seeing as how I'm only doing that about 0.00001% of the time, I'm not worried about it. I do fill up with 89 when I tow though. Level 2 with 87 has given me a consistent 1+mpg increase in mileage - level 3 has lots of power, but mileage is same as stock. The levels are: 0-stock, 1-transmission only, 2-towing performance(needs 87 octane minimum), and 3-performance(needs 91 octane). There is no towing "mode" - you simply load whatever level you want 0-4, and drive.
