Using 04-06 Edge to read '00 codes???
I swear I saw this question asked once upon a time and I didn't pay attention to it. Now I searched and didn't find anything. Simple question, can I use my Edge for my 05 to read any codes off my gf's 00? I'm fairly certain it won't recognize the hex code and so the game's over right there. Maybe the OBD II gods have a spot of kindness for me today and it'll work?
Hi.
Well a CAN protocol-capable Xcal2 is backwards compatible with a non-CAN vehicle, so it's possible, but not likley, the Edge is as well.
I'm thinking is that the '04+ Edge was orginally designed for CAN only, so may not have backwards support...
The connector, pinout and signals are standardized; it's just the communication protocol that is different. The CAN bus uses pins 6 & 14 - those are not used on a non-CAN vehicle so no problem. As long as the Edge also utilizes the J1850 bus ( pre-CAN like the '00) it will connect.

So, given the above a quick check would be to look at your OBD-II plug on your Edge. If there is an actual contact present in positions 2 & 10, go ahead & plug it in and try it. If not, don't bother.
It will either connect to the PCM, or it won't.
Since the pins are assigned depending upon protocol, you can't hurt anything. Give it a try.
'Course, if yer ****, you could just call Edge support and ask 'em.
Cheers
