What to do.

Im new to the whole chip, programes, and tuners world. I have always dealt with striaght bolt on power increasers. But i have a 98 F150 with the 4.6 and a 5 speed and have upgraded the exhast and intake. I dont know anyone who has an electronic upgarde in their truck. I was hoping you guys could help me. I have heard a lot about somebody on here that makes custome upgrades. I think his name is Troyer. Maybe thats a company. He seems to be every where in these forums.

I have seen all the resistor upgrades to the ait temp sensor and all the "chips" on the net that offer the smae bang for no buck. I am really wery about these.

Anyways heres my question. I wouldn't mind spending one or two hundred dollars on something to try it out. Im skeptical about dropping 500 dollars on a tuner and then find out i dont like what it does or it wasn't worth it. What should i do. If anyone runs one let me know what you thouhgt about the gains. Is it worth what you paid?

THanks a bunch guys.

Superchip

I was on Troyer Performance web site and i saw a superchips performance chip that was 230 dollars and claimed a 10-15 % gains with the use of 91 or higher fuel. Is this worth it to buy this product and pay a little more at the pumps. Lets face it. Nobody wants to pay more at the pumps. ONe thing i liked about it was that it remoeved the limiter on my truck. Thats a big thing to me. Its set stock at 98 mph and that sucks. Any help guys

Give TP a call and ask about the custom tuning. Mikes tuning brought my truck to life, big time, the best mod I’ve ever done

Hmmm...

Spend $230 on a chip or spend $335 for an Edge Evo 2, I'd save up the extra $105 and go with the Egde.

I've only been running 87 octane in my Edge, tow tune ( Level 2 ) so far and have been very happy with it, plus it has all the gauges for monitoring MPG, Coolant temps Etc.

The Edge does all the things the chip does and so much more for alot less than $500, and not much more than $230.

I think the $335 I paid for the Edge was well worth it, and don't think you'd be dissapointed.

Just my .02

twintips16,

First, just to acquaint you with the rules here - it's against the rules here to post specific parts pricing, just so you'll know.

Next - I suggest you forget focusing on the cheapest parts you can find, as all that will get you is the worst results. You are right be be leery about that stupid resistor, as that is nothing but a gimmick that can actually damage your engine.

The first thing to consider is this - are you going to keep that 9 year old vehicle? If so, then you need to use only the best parts, even if that means you need to save up longer to do that - otherwise all you are going to do is have a sow truck with a few cheap bolt-ons that don't do much, if anything, for the performance of the vehicle. As a vehicle owner, I think it's most important to think more about the actual amount of R&D that goes into things like the tuning of your vehicle - and what will actually get you the best results in terms of tuning is our Troyer Performance custom tuning, as we have specialized in tuning this platform for 15 years - far longer than anyone else.

I also think it's only fair to tell you not to expect your truck to feel like you just strapped on a supercharger from a tune, as that is not appropriate - our custom tuning *is* the single best bang for the buck performance enhancement, but it's got to be taken with a proper measure of expectation - I.E., don't expect supercharger results just from tuning - that does not negate the fact that proper and thorough performance tuning is the best bang for the buck, it just means that nothing else for the same or less cost does as much for the vehicle as thorough custom tuning.

As a registered member here on F-150 Online, you get a special discounted price on our custom tuning delivered in the XCalibrator 2 (that is our Part# 9400 - and that applies ONLY to our custom tuning, that does NOT apply to other parts, which are already heavily discounted) so that you can get the best tuning & the best tuner at the lowest possible price.

In short - if you want to modify your truck, do it right - do the best modification in each specific area - from tuning, to the intake, to the exhaust, and so forth. We actually test the parts available for these trucks, so that we know which parts actually do the best job - that is why our customer's trucks make more power and have better performance for a given level of modification, and we'll be happy to advise you along those lines, just give us a call at our number listed below.

Good luck with your truck, & thanks for your post!
