Type and quality of gasoline brands

Greetings from NJ,

Wondering if anyone can illuminate me as to the variations in gasoline quality by brand and by season (i.e., summer additives etc).

Wondering what is the best to use here in Souther NJ.

Waiting for my Xcal2 tunes!

John

They all pull from the same distributor. Or at least, they do around here. So there's no difference.

I used to think gas was gas, just like oil was oil. Jersey has a few refineries, so the gas isn't all the same here. The real proof came when I started experimenting and found a lot of my rough idle/running problems came from Exxon gas. I refuse to buy Citgo as it is owned by the Venezuelan government. I found Hess fuels to run best in all my vehicles (97 Escort, 98 Expedition, 89 F350, 79 Bronco & 02 Dodge diesel 2500).
Winter/summer blends are irrelevent in NJ as you have no choice, the law dictates what blends the stations have to supply and when.

I have been testing gas in my area and also found Citgo to give significantly better fuel mileage and even better mileage with 91 under full load towing conditions.
An investigation of Citgo reveals that their additive package is a patented combination from Unocal corp, by agreement.
There is no less than 16 chemicals on their composition list.
My 02 4.6 engine on level 2 EVO programming sure likes the Citgo gas.
In N.J. , you have a different situation with your state's manditory formulations.
Just have to try it and see.
I have more trials to do with 93 and level 3 programming.

You are correct about Citgo and Venezuelan gov. If you want to support Chavez and his buddies in Iran, then buy from Citgo.

If you want quality American gasoline, then buy Conoco/Phillips. In the midwest it's hard to beat Phillips 66. One of their largest, if not their largest, refineries in the world is located in Southern Illinois on the Metro East side of St. Louis, MO. They sell from this refinery throughout the midwest and the products are stable and dependable. They have 93 octane, which is all that I run in everything I own.

I have spent a lot of time with getting every last bit of performance I can out of 125cc and 250cc motorcycle engines for competition hillclimbing. These are some highly tuned engines. My son has won State Championships in both Illinois and Indiana, so apparently we are doing something right. One of the things I have learned through the years is that proper tuning on these little 2-stroke engines requires consistent fuel quality and specs. The only pump fuel I have tried that I can depend on is the Phillips. All of the others, from Amoco/BP to Shell, have varying specs and qualities, depending upon the station, the time of year, and even from each fuel supply delivery.

Seems to me that this consistent fuel quality would be a very good thing on these hugh gas guzzling trucks we drive if we want to get them tuned properly.

As Dennis Miller says: "Just one man's opinion, but I could be wrong."

Shell here in Texas gives me the best mpg readings. Don't know about up there.

Gas isn't all the same. Different brands have different addatives, regardless of the supplier. It's added after arrival from the supplier.

Citgo/Chavez/Venezuela(good buddies with the Communist Castro and Terrorist Iran) buys most of their gasoline sold in USA from other oil companies, because their refineries can not supply all that their retail outlets sell. Citgo refineries are mostly older/poor condition outdated refineries they have purchased from the other oil companies. Recently they announced that they would stop supplying gasoline to many of their retail outlets because they were losing money on the purchase and remarket of the products.

You should try to find out where the fuel your local Citgo outlets sell actually comes from. Then you could buy from those oil companies directly, and cut out the middlemen communists and terrorists.

Or if you want to support your local honest station operator, you could ask him to change to a different source for his supply, or try to operate a different gasoline franchise. He may be one of the outlets that Citgo recently decided to stop supplying, and will need to find a different source anyway.

OK guys, we really don't need to argue back and forth.

1.) There IS a difference in fuels - it is NOT true that all fuels are the same, that is quite obvious by doing proper fuel mileage testing, as well as tuning using *proper* controls - which is rarely actually done.

2.) I couldn't care less who owns Citgo - it is the best fuel that we can find in many areas here in the East, my 11-second Lighting runs best on it, as do all of our other vehicles - it allows us the most aggressive tuning and delivers the best fuel mileage at any state of tune for a given octane level, thus indicating clearly a higher BTU content. It's also on both Ford and BMW's good gas list, though these days, that does not necessarily mean a whole lot, as lately there are some fuels on that list I wouldn't' touch with a 10 foot pole.

3.) You aren't going to change *any* government based on what brand of fuel you buy - and no, I don't care for the government of Ven., either. But I will continue to use and recommend Citgo here in the East - just as I will continue to tell people that if they want to do their own informal testing of fuels to use, do properly controlled fuel mileage testing, as the fuel that delivers the highest fuel mileage under the same basic driving conditions (at the same time of year!) is generally the fuel with the higher BTU content - and the additives put into the fuels at the final point of distribution DO indeed have an effect on energy content, detergency levels, etc.

With all of that said - everyone use whatever fuel makes you happy - but don't complain about tuning results, fuel mileage, detonation, etc., when using off-brand, no-names fuels, or when using the cheapest gas you can find - all that does is assure you (generally speaking, there will be the occasional exception of course) of the lowest quality fuel.

We wish you all well,
