Maybe a dumb question, but....

I just traded my 2000 Lariat for a 03 Lightning. I pulled my superchip 1715 off of my Lariat and returned it to stock mode. Now, I know that this particular unit is compatible with my Lightning. My question is, will this void my "Premium Care" warranty? If I take my truck in for service, will they, or can they be able to tell if the chip was activated. What should I do??

Thanks for any feedback...

Can't you just throw it back into stock mode before you bring it in.

I'd just go talk to them to make sure.

I would call Troyer and order a custom tuned Xcal2 for that new Lightning.
Mike tuned my '01 Lightning, as well as my '03 Cobra, and I realized excellent results... Don't trust that vehicle to any generic/canned tunes, it deserves only the best. You will be wearing one of these afterwards---

superchips is a very generic product. if your vehicle is heavily modded, or a lightning in your case, the 1715 is wrong for you. id recommend you sell your 1715 and buy a better tuner, whether it be xcal or diablo, that specifies towards your vehicle and how it is ridiculously different from a naturally aspirated truck

Thanks,
I just pulled up a site on XCal2. Is it user friendly? Im guessing it will take a tech to help me waltz through this process. What kind of performance gain can I get out of this product?

Unit is very user friendly.
You will need to pick a tuner to write your desired tunes(I suggest Mike Troyer) as he has been tuning Lightnings since they hit the scene. My truck was making 495/628 with his custom tuning, and an additional 7# of boost.
I drove it practically everyday weather permitting and averaged 18mpg on the highway....Give him a call @ 540-862-9515, you will be glad you did.

Hi Wiggin,

Well, the 1715 actually *does* have tunes in it for the Lightning, and they aren't bad - they are perhaps the best of Superchips Inc's "off the shelf" tunes for any F-150 - in fact, we worked with Superchips Inc on those tunes for quite some time, so they aren't bad, as long as your vehicle is configured for the exact types of tunes contained in the 1715.

That being said, especially with a forced induction engine like the Lightning, Cobra, etc., I do tend to agree that going with our custom tuning is the best way to go - it not only gets you the best safe & sustainable power gains, but is tuned exactly for how you use the vehicle - and we provide you with a set of 3 different custom tunes that can be set up any way you like, taking into consideration any modifications you have done, how you use the vehicle, etc.

One thing that is important to know is that the 1715 tuner dose disable the torque management for the Lightning, and without a transmission modification (like our simple & very inexpensive line mod valve), over time this can deteriorate the clutches inside the transmission a bit quicker if you use full-throttle - this is due to the fact that the 4R100 tranny in the Lightning (and in some other vehicles) cannot fill the oncoming clutch quickly enough to prevent burning the clutches during a full-power full-throttle upshift - and is why Ford shuts down 4 cylinders and reduces power even further during heavy-throttle upshifts, which really hurts performance. Now that is easily cured as I said before, with our inexpensive line mod valve, so that you can have the tuning set up like that - and we do prefer to see that torque management during upshifts removed to provide the best performance - we just want to see that simple & easy to install tranny mod done too, to prevent premature wear on those clutches - it simply enables the transmission to flow more fluid volume in a shorter period of time, thus reducing the slippage on the clutches. This gets more and more important as you do the common Lightning mods, like tuning, increasing boost, and the other things that the Lightnings respond to so well and that most of their owners do.

To go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below & we'll be happy to go over all of this with you, & thanks for your post - and congrats on your Lightning, too!

Well,
I activated my 1715 and I must say Im pretty impressed with the performance gain. It really woke my "L" up. Alot more HP gain over my last truck.(2000 Lariat) I would really like to see the difference in a custom tune since everyone on here has recommended it over the 1715. Im in the process of moving right now but, within a couple of weeks I will be giving Troyer a call. My truck is bone stock and this will be my first upgrade. Any recommendations for a budget of about a grand and a half. Any input would be greatly appreciated... Wigginwilly.....

Your best bet would to be to actually call Troyer Performance and speak to Mike directly about your inteded modifications and usage.
Most of us here have done that and ended up with an hours worth of free consultation (and learning) about the tuning process.
Everyones needs will be different. You will have to take into account how you use the truck and under what circumstances.
Foe example, do yopu intend to tow or not? What fuel is available in your area? Do you live at a high elevation? Etc etc.
All of these parameters will affect what mods you should perform and the tunes you will need.

I started out with the first production 1715 for my L. With that and a AF1 intake I ran a 13.1 in the 1/4.

xcal2, 4lb interchangable lower, and a cold air kit, i use a air force one kit would be best bang for buck with mods on the L. u could get all from troyer if ya wanted, ulll love mikes custom tunes if u like the way the 1715 woke it up. add a line valve mod so mike can disable torque reduction and ur in good shape with a quick truck. enjoy

Hi Wiggin,

You'll want to give us a call to get the best recommendations for your list of best bang for the buck mods for whatever you given budget will be - we don't do that here, it's far too much to type out and there is more info we need to know from you as well, as there are a number of things to discuss to steer you correctly.

We make this very painless, so just give us a call whenever you get a chance & we'll be happy to cover all of this with you in appropriate detail, OK?

Thanks, & good luck!
