Going to pull the trigger.

I have a 01 f-150 sc with a 5.4L stock with a s/s magnaflow si/so exhaust. I am going to order the excal2 very soon.
I need alittle feedback in the custom tune department. I use this truck about 5000 miles a year, a third of that milage is towing a travel trailer that is near the max capacity of my truck. When I place the order for the excal2 I want to make sure that I get the right types of config files for my application. I was thinking about getting a 87 performance, 87 tow, and 91 tow performance. I am not a speed demon, I could use more power in the towing range of the engine and with the gas prices the way thay are I really don't want to become addicted to 91 octane. Does anyone use this type if setup? If so how does it work out for you? Or is there a better way of using the three custom files that would work for my situation. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

The best thing to do is to give Mike a call and discuss your needs.

P.S. Welcome to the board. You will see a lot of good info. and some B.S.(good for entertainment).

I think you are making a very wise decision with the 91 towing tune. Both 87 tunes sound good too.
I run my 87 performance tune all the time and love it.
The 91 tow tune will give you some extra towing umphhhhh.
Give Mike that call and get it ordered.....

At 5000 miles a year if 93 octane is available at all destinations where you drive the truck,I would go 87 perf,93 tow,93 performance. From the time I loaded the first tune and I burned 87 out of the tank,I filled up with 93 octane and will leave it at 93 octane.I feel that the performance, and mileage I receive on the 93 more then makes up for the added cost of the gas.I'll average about 20,000 miles this year,I feel it is worth every penny.87 tow,93 tow,93 performance is what I have loaded.

Hi vze32nmi,

Given the fact that you do not want to be locked in to premium gas when you tow, you made the right decision.

Now, once you actually compare towing on the 87 octane tune to towing on the premium gas tune, you may never use the 87 octane towing tune again, due to the significant difference in power & fuel mileage in the pre-2004 trucks - but this is strictly up to you - heck, even if you do feel that way in the future, we can always send you an additional tune you can store on your hard drive so that you can swap them around on your XCalibrator 2 - it's very nice to have that kind of flexibility!

Thanks for your order, and for your post - and good luck with your truck!
