2005 stock lariat, which programmer?

I read alot of the other threads but thought I'd ask which programmer meets the needs for a stock 5.4 F150, no other mods planned or installed. I'd like to get better throttle response, and the ability to adjust for different size tires. also, if the one I need is an older version please let me know, I'll try a used one too if it will give me the minimal changes I want.
Thanks,

Thanks,
Call Troyer Performance Monday morning at 9:00 AM when they open and discuss this with one of the knowledgable employees that answer the phone.
I would suggest you go with the X-Cal2 with 3 of Mikes custom tunes. You can then get what you want in performance and towing. The X-Cal also lets you adjust for gears, tire size. Reads DTC"s too. By far the best tuning instrument out there for these trucks..

Marc offers some good advice, and I'm sure you would be happy with the XCal2. However, since your truck is stock and your performance needs are minimal (i.e., better throttle response and ability to adjust for different tire sizes), I think you would also be happy with the Edge Evolution.

The Edge provides improved throttle response over stock, gives you the ability to adjust for tires and gears, reads/clears DTCs, and displays up to 4 engine parameters (e.g., transmission temp, oil temp, etc.) simultaneously. You also get three tunes: transmission only, towing, and performance. You can read more about it here. If cost is an issue, the Evolution tends to be less expensive than the XCal2. MoJoe also did a head-to-head comparison of the XCal2 and the Edge here.

If you can wait, Edge will be releasing the new Edge A2 within a few months. It includes a power programmer, GPS with spoken directions, engine monitoring system, optional backup camera, and a lot more. There is some good info on the A2 in this thread.

If you are not planning any other mods, the Edge Evolution will be the best bang for your buck. It's like buying a digital gauge set and getting a tuner for free. Best money I've spent on the truck so far.

I recommend the XCal2; IMO it’s the best tuner currently available for Ford

Hi MDCurtis,

What will actually get you the best results is our Troyer Performance custom tuning - and that is simply because we have more experience tuning these trucks than anyone else (well, save for maybe Ford themselves), as we have specialized in them for almost 15 years now. To the point that we routinely get called by major chipmakers for help in developing their F-series applications.

Our custom tunes do far more for the performance of *any* truck, modified or bone-stock, than *any* off the shelf-pre-programmed unit - it's that simple.

Don't get me wrong, we sell the standard off-the-shelf units too - and that's OK for those who don't care about getting the best or even thorough tuning. But for those who want the best for their trucks, and who want tuning that has more R&D behind it, those people come to us for our experience and a much more thorough tune - we tune each vehicle individually based on what each individual vehicle owner needs & wants.

Most people are realize that, just like we don't try to design bridges, proper tuning of these modern and highly complex vehicles is best left to those who specialize in this specific platform. We have done precisely that longer than anyone else, which is why better results are had with our custom tuning, as we go much further into the programming of these vehicles - if you take the time to look up some of the many posts from customers of ours who have actually come here to see how we do what we do during our public Dyno Day events and the results of our work compared to that of off-the-shelf type units, you'll quickly see why so many people come to us. I say that because I don't want this to sound like some cheap sales pitch, it's simply the facts.

There are some people who mistakenly think that because a vehicle is stock, that it doesn't need, or won't benefit from, our custom tuning - and that is simply incorrect. A "custom" tune is the only way you get a proper & thorough tune that gives the best results *regardless* of the state of modification of the vehicle - bone stock, highly modified, or anything in between. With each passing model year this gets more and more important.

I hope this brief info helps, and if you'd like to go over any of this in more thorough detail, ask questions, etc., please feel free to give us a call - our number is listed below & we're happy to help - and best of luck with whatever you decide!

I got my edge purely for the guages! Being able to adjust shift points, rev limits, top speeds, tire sizes, hp output, shift firmness, read codes, and test 0-60 & 1/4 mile times at your fingertips, is just a bonus.

It installed in less than 5 minutes.

And it was cheap.

Hey Curtis,

I have a Hypertech model #41043. I use it in my 2005. I would not recommend it at all. I think I might sell it on ebay soon and buy something else. I don't see any difference with it or without it programmed.

I had a Hypertech on my 2002 F150 before I got the new truck and was very happy with that one. So that's why I bought another one.

I also had a Hypertech 41043 unit and quickly stuck it up on eBay to help pay for my EDGE. The Hypertech unit is extremely slow reading and writing to the truck's computer. It must have taken me upwards of 30 minutes to program my truck with that thing. It really seems abnormally large and primitive compared to the other choices for our trucks.

I would highly recommend the EDGE if you would like a tuner with 3 great standard tunes, the ability to make your own custom tune, a set of digital guages, free firmware, software, and calibration updates over the internet, and great customer service.

Go with the Edge Evolution. I love the Gauges and the way it sits flush in the truck. Check this web site out www.discountpowerparts.com They are the cheapest by far and I had no problem dealing with them. If you want the best go with the EDGE.
