Want more power!

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to see what you guys suggest for my truck. It is a 2006 Reg Cab with a V-6 engine. Since I replaced my my OEM tires to 295's I have significantly lost accel. and power. What do you guys recommend? Tuner? Super Chips? Edge?

Mainly city and highway driver.

Thanks!

Maybe an engine replacement..??..

Seriously though, you bought a v6 for a reason, one of which was NOT power. I had the 4.2 before, and it's a great engine, but again not real powerful, especially with our heavy trucks. The only thing I can recommend is re-gearing your rearend. Tuners are going to give you a slight increase, but they give a percentage of increase based on stock performance, so if you start off with low power, the increase won't be very much...

Not trying to argue this point, but why didn't you at least get a V8.
a V6 imo is false economy that you already fell into with a tire size change.
To beat this you need a lower gear rear then on to other mods.
The money begins to add up that could have bought a bigger motor.

I hope that at least your V6 is a stick. If not, off the line I can only imagine the lack of accelleration frustration.

With my old '97 F-150 (4x4, 5 sp,reg cab, long box, 285s), I had an Air Force 1 intake, and SIDO Magnaflow pipes from Troyer and with a stick I could leave 10'+ rubber trails in first gear. Granted, it wasn't fast on the top end, but 1st through second I could at least match or better a 4.6L off the line.

The worst thing I did was go from stock tires to the 285s IMO. 'Till I blew that damn thing up

In retrospect, I'd go back to stock tires, get an XCalII, AF1 intake, and true dual exhaust if I had a thousand plus bucks to spend

Good luck in whatever you decide though.

Gears is about the the only thing to help that. All the other stuff will help, but gears is probably the key.

I agree with the re-gearing however you will be very happy with the XCAL2 and an AF1 intake. I can stand behind that combination as I did the same on my 4.2. I got 285's and was considering re-gearing first but decided to go with the XCAL2 and AF1 intake since the group buy was going on. It really woke the truck up, corrected my speedometer, and shift points. I still plan on changing out my gears eventually but wanted to throw in my vote for custom tuning, you won't be sorry.

Which programmer is better for my 99 4.6 for more power and other feature. Thought about hypertech or superchip or is there something better or which one.

You can make it fast. On another forum, I recall a guy with a 5-speed manual on his 4.2. A lot of bolt-on mods (like all of them short of forced induciton), he ran the quarter in the 13s. As I recall, he also removed a lot of weight. And I'm pretty sure he's got a turbo now.

Hello, get the xcal2,the power is in the engine and Mike can place it in an easy to find location.Don't listen to these guys talking down the 4.2 it is damn good and surprisingly quick engine.06 4.2 auto with 33's is what I have and 355 rear end.I have raced many a truck around here and you can keep up with a 4.6 and make an honest run, mind you your giving it everything it's got and you have good driving abilities you might ruffle the feathers of a couple 5.4 owners if they are stock.I know I'll get some flack for this but I'll stand behind it.The aftermarket air intake setup is not made for the 06-4.2 as of yet, soon I hope.I have ran 93 octane since I filled the tank after loading the tunes.I have 87 tow,93tow,93 performance.xcal2 is something you need!I have 10,000 miles on this engine since 12/17/05

Hi sacbutt,

As you can see from TSDan's post, we can indeed help out that 4.2 V6 engine with better performance.

It responds just like any other engine to proper performance enhancements, and in fact, can withstand higher % power gains than either the 4.6 or the 5.4 V8's before you run into problems - heck, I took a 4.2 V6 and cranked it up to well over 300 HP at the rear wheels with a blower (and this was an automatic) and that truck was still running great at 170K miles.

The first place to start off with is our custom tuning - that is what will get you the most performance for the least cost, as we'll provide you with a set of 3 different custom tunes set up specifically for your truck & how you operate it - that is the single best bang for the buck.

Please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below & we'll be happy to go over those details with you.

Thanks for your post, & best of luck with your truck!

Sorry for the late response!

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the help! Especially TSDan and Mike. Hopefully soon, I will be able to purchase one of your products and once again enjoy my truck's performance.

Thanks!

Hi sacbutt,

Don't worry about a late response, & we're happy to help.

The 4.2 V6 has more potential than some think, even if it is the smallest engine offered, there is still always more that can be had from it. Heck, in the previous generation F-150's (1997-2003), we have a number of them supercharged & kicking 5.4 F-150's butts by a long shot - as always, it's a matter of how far you want to go. There's some old saying about how you can go as fast as you want to spend, or something like that!

Talk to you soon,
