Whats the best Tuner for more MPG ???

Hey,

New F150 owner here, long time Ford Truck owner, life-long gearhead.

I am looking for some sort of tuner/programmer for my new 2006 F-150 Lariat SuperCrew. The thing is less than 48 hours old, and I am allready starting to buy things for it

This is my daily driver/ to and from work vechile, so fuel economy is my MAIN concern, over power and everything else. Is their a certain Tuner/Brand/Setup that is proven to give more in the MPG dept. than others.
I also plan to do some sort of cold air/remove the stock crap intake setup as well...

On my last truck (Excursion Turbo-Diesel) , their were certain tuners that were mainly for better fuel economy, then the ones that were strictly for power..

As always , all help/input is appreciated.....

Welcome, always nice to meet another gear head. Well, if you are looking to JUST get fuel economy check out SCT/Troyer for a fuel economy tune. They can program 3 tunes for you so you could do 1 fuel economy, 1 tow and 1 performance, or whatever. Troyer is a supporting vendor of the site and goes by Superchips_Distributor here. He is widely admired for his tunes and knowledge.

As for other tuners, I hve received a small gain from my Edge Evolution tuner, but I purchased it mainly for the performance aspects.

Other areas to look at are keeping the smaller stock wheels/tires, stock gears, driving habits (really the best way to get good mileage on these), and there are some small improvements to be had with a CAI/Exhaust (also mainly for the performance) etc. Also, as thee truck breaks in the mileage will improve.

Best of luck and enjoy your new truck.

E-FANS, and a Troyer Performance Custom economy tune, and some really good driving habits.

Royal Purple claims that you can get better mileage by switching you fluids! I believe you need to wait til the engine is broken in to switch to synthetic oil, but I may be wrong. I am running royal purple 5w-20 right now and I have not noticed any improvements in MPG.

As for the Cold Air Intake and exaust, I have both on my FX4 and have noticed no increase in MPG.

Tire Size

I have a 2004 F150 4x4 Reg cab stepside with a 4.6 and I went form the stock approx. 31" tires to a 295-70-17 which is about a 33" tire. I thought it KILLED my mileage. Come to find out I was showing more mileage because my speedo was about 3 mph slow at 70 mph stock from the factory. The tires changed my speed about 5 mph at 70, but it had to correst the three under stock form the factory. So essentially I was calculating 18+ mpg before I changed the stock tires, but I was actually only getting around 17+. Yes the tires hurt my mileage a little but not as bad as I had originally thought. I had to use my GPS to figure out Ford was trying to shorten my 3 yr 36,000 factory warranty and show a better fuel economy. Just something I thought everyone should be aware of...

Thanks for the tips guys.
Anyone have a link to this Troyer guy , I would like to pick his brain about this three position programmer deal he sells. Sounds like the way to go. As stated this truck is mainly for to and from driving, as I have a few old cars and bikes to get my "Speed" on...

I have been wondering if some sort of aftermarket cold air intake would do anything for a MPG increase ? The stock system looks like a nightmare , with all those "silencers" and such. I am even thinking about making one myself (have done it before) , rather than spend $400 plus on a pre-made unit.

What is the best fitting/cost effective pre-made cold air for these trucks ???

Hello Pro Teal,

Performance tuning is done for *performance & power* - not for MPG, just speaking in general.

That being said, sure, we can do MPG-specific tuning for you, as another poster mentioned. The hot tip is to do what most people here do - have us do our normal Troyer Performance custom tuning in the XCalibrator 2, and that way you will have 3 different types of tunes - you could have one for say, best MPG, then another for towing, and then last, one for best performance - just for example.

See, none of the off-the-shelf tuners are designed primarily for MPG - they are designed for *performance*, and any improvement in MPG is purely a by-product, and strictly secondary to it's primary purpose, which is to improve performance.

Your best bet is to call us at our number listed below & have us do a set of 3 custom tunes like we normally do for most people here, so that you can get multiple types of tunes and cover all the bases.

Our number is listed just below for your convenience, & best of luck whatever you decide!

What sort of improvement could be expected as a by product?
What would the device and "Tune" cost?
Is the savings in MPG enough to offset the cost of the mod for the typical driver?

1st time poster, great forum with a wealth of info.
Thanks,

If you're looking for a good intake, kandn, green, and airraid make some good ones. you can also get a new mass airflow sensor.

other things to try are

Not sure about the new vehicles having individual coil packs or not, but if it doesn't, get new spark plugs. i like bosche platinum 4's myself. a lower thermostat, e fans, change out the oxygen sensors in your exhaust.

but there is a fine line between economy and horsepower. don't watch out your'e going to be like me and go for straight up horsepower.

Rick, forum rules dictate that no price information can be discussed by a vendor; However, give Mike a call (see post #9 above) and he'll be happy to discuss the details with you.
