This morning I was passing an old lady who was driving horribly. Anyway I floored the gas from about a 25 mph roll and the truck took off like banshee like I expected. I am running the 92 perf tune. Anyway right after there was a strong odor of burning. The same smell that comes from a slipping clutch or riding the brakes. At first I thought it was my serp belt since Troyer says the factory ones suck and slip at high rpms. I have punched it a lot and have heard the belt squeal but never this smell.
Now I am wondering if it was something in my transmission. I have no idea how an auto trans works but I know there are belts (or bands) and such that perform the shifts. Does anyone have any insight as to what this was? I hope it was just the serp belt.

Change the belt and go out and punch it again to try to reproduce the smell,if you can not, then I would hope you foung the cause.Also pull the dip stick from the trans.,if it smells burnt(you will notice burnt smell)get it checked out.Based on what you already said it most likely is the belt.

 

You can also just reach under your hood, grab the belt and run your hand along it for a few seconds, and smell your hand. Sounds funny, but you can usually still smell a burned belt for a long time afterwards. In fact, if you can reproduce the smell, pull over and try this immediately. You'll probably still be able to smell it just sticking your head under the hood.
