87 tow v/s 87 performance

I have a situation that requires opinions.1-Can you describe the difference in performance between the 87 tow and the 87 performance tunes?2-Also if you only had 1 choice in your programmer which would you choose?
Would like as many replies before am tomorrow. Thanks guys

Can't say anything on the difference in performance between the 87 tow and the 87 performance, I do have 87 performance tune, but have never loaded it, I would use the Stock Ford Tune for 87 tow... I can't comment on the tunes... but as far as a programmer, I would recommend SCT XCal2, if nothing else it can be reprogrammed for any late model ford Gas or Diesel and gives the tuner more PCM control than any other flash device

remember you stock tune from Ford is also a 87 tow tune..that why hardly any of us have ordered a Custom 87 Tow Tune....use stock for that.....

I have 87 Tow, 87 Perf and 93 perf.

If I had to pick between 87T and 87P I'd take the tow because you cant tow with the 87 P package

I don’t use 87-octane very often since I’ve been custom tuned. I do have an 87-performance tune though and then I have a 93-tow and a 93-max performance. The biggest difference I can feel between the 93-tow and the 93- max performance is the shifting. The tow shifts a lot smother and the max performance tune hits it pretty hard at WOT. The tow tune ain’t a slouch by any means though; plenty of extra power in all four gears

If I could only have one tune that would be a tough call because I don’t do a lot of heavy towing but occasionally the need does come up. Luckily, I don’t have to chose because I actually have a choice of four tunes on my Troyer tuned XCal2

1. Stock
2. 87-performance
3. 93-tow
4. 93-max performance *my personal favorite; this is where the big power is at

It only takes about 8 minutes to switch between tunes and you’re ready to go, no break in period but you want to make sure you keep your octane’s matched up to the tune you have installed.

The reason I trumpet the 93-octane is because it’s only an extra fin for 25 gallons and the difference in power is huge and the fuel economy with 93 is superb, a lot better than 87

Hope this helped some

The difference in the shifting is to save the tranny on the tow and performance. The harder its working the hotter it gets and if it gets hot enough long enough, the sooner it dies. Depending on your mods, you could tow on the stock parameters, but for someone like me I don't have a stock choice with all the add ons I have.

We do not go over in detail exactly what we do differently between those 2 types of tunes, as that is proprietary information our competitors would just love to have - so we will not discuss that in detail.

Just very briefly in general, a towing tune requires some differences in shift characteristics, as well as some difference in engine tuning.

Towing is a unique type of situation, where the engine is under vastly increased loads, and must pull hard for longer periods of time - so therefore it requires different tuning in several ways to insure a proper tune that is actually appropriate for towing.

In short - if you need to tow, use a towing-compatible tune - if you are not towing, you can still use our towing tune, that will not hurt anything - but more people prefer the more performance-oriented aspects of our tuning when not towing.

I hope that helps a bit,

Mike thanks for your reply!I had a mix-up and decided to stay with what the tuner had loaded on it.I actually love the 87 tow tune you put into the tuner.I was wanting others opinions just to feel out the waters. The tune is a great improvement over stock and I do tow, which would not be to fun if I had 87 in the tank and no tow tune.Actually I recommend the tune to anyone who does tow,it was the first tune I loaded and it shocked me more than the 93 perf. tune, because I was not expecting such a huge difference over stock.Like I said in other posts my hat's off to you.

Hi TSDan,

OK, glad that info helped -

And thanks for much for your kudo's - I'm delighted that you are enjoying our tuning in your truck, that's what matters, the vehicle owner enjoying the tuning. And yes, you DO pick up very nice gains even on 87 octane, that does tend to surprise some people, even though of course the very highest gains come on the premium gas tunes, the 87 octane tunes are fun too.
