Now, I am a bit curious about those stretching head bolts. Any idea what material those bolts are made of? That must have been one funky sounding noise as the head began to leak. I wonder what it looked like at night!

I would imagine that stock bolts simply were not suitable (yield strength too low) for the added stress the tune brought to the PS. Perhaps other components would have failed if bolts with more yield strength were substituted but replacing head bolts that might have prevented the "headless stroker" syndrome. It would take a few engineers or hobbyists to come of with the numbers if head bolt upgrade was even a practical consideration.

Were other engine parts going to be ok with the addition stress? Maybe that retiring Exxon Oil CEO can donate a few Ford Powerstrokes to do some testing on. He'll still have over 399 of his 400 million bonus rermaining and won't be living long enough to spend 1/3 of it.

I hate to inform you of this fact.Diesel engines have been scretching head bolts since the engine was invented.I have been around diesel engines since I was 16 years old.I went to school at Wyoming technical inst. in Laramie,Wyoming and graduated as a diesel tech. Also any backyard mechanic can tell you that All diesel engine head bolts stretch over time.It is a common fact.
Gee Dan, you don't have to feel bad about informing me, I enjoy education. And yes I understand diesel's stretch head bolts, but not normally in 2 or 3 thousand miles as folks are experiancing with some of the 6.0's. A lot of folks replace the head bolts prior to tuning on the 6.0's with superior to OEM bolts , just something I wasn't interested in doing on an engine under warrenty. Plus personally I never liked the 6.0 as well as my 99 7.3, especially with all the things ford flashed out of the program to try to keep the motor alive. I wonder why Ford is replaceing the 6.0 after only 4 or 5 years of trying to get it right.
