Mike T, need help with CEL and tuner

Mike i havent gotten the tuner yet, but i want to ask this before i get it and install. I have been getting a CEL and the code P0455, evap leak detected large. It comes and goes. But when on the truck runs kinda crappy. Can you tell me if this code will cause any problems with the tuner after its installed? Some have been telling me that the ecu is shot and that it needs to be replaced, if so i'll need the tuner reprogrammed?

I recommend that you have your vehicle properly diagnosed & repaired by your local Ford dealership. We are not a general repair facility, we do not do that type of work - we're a performance shop, so what we do is pretty much strictly performance-related.

I can tell you is that this is not something we commonly see requiring PCM replacement - the possible causes for an EVAP leak are about a foot long, and almost all have to do with LEAKS (including having the proper factory gas cap on) - not PCM replacement.

If you have a mechanical problem before the tuning, you will have it after the tuning as well, until the vehicle is properly diagnosed & repaired. If the PCM is replaced with a PCM of a different PCM code, then yes, you may need new tunes, too.

I also suggest that you pick up a Ford Technical Service Publications CD-ROM that will tell you a list of diagnostic procedures for any code, so that you will have an idea of what needs to be done in order to diagnose a lot of things. For example, the list of possible causes for a P0455 is a foot long, none of which have anything to do with the PCM itself from what I see. It's a leak, and should be diagnosed as such from what I can see listed.

That being said, I cannot tell you with 100% certainty that it absolutely CAN"T be a problem with the PCM - just that the PCM is not listed as a possible cause of that code by Ford in their Technical Service Publications. I think the route to go is to let your local Ford dealership have a look at it and see what they say.

Good luck!
