What are the chances my EDGE can read a code from an '03 Golf?

Obviously I can't tune the Golf with the Edge, that's not what I'm going for but a buddy of mine has a CEL that he wants to know what it is without spending $90 to have a mechaninc read it for him.
Is it possible for the Edge (04+) to read the CEL through the OBDII port on a VW Golf?

Not gonna happen. Even the $3,000 Snap-On diagnostic machines need special programs and adapters to read different vehicles.

Ya, I thought that but he sits behind me at work and has been going on about the CEL that he's been getting for the past couple months now. Just trying to help a brother out.
Thanks

You might want to try it, whats the worst that can happen? At worst it will do nothing, or you could actually read the code for him. The reason I say try it is because here in N.E. Ohio (Cleveland area) they now do emissions tests on OBD II (96'-up) vehicles by plugging into the diagnostic port and checking for codes. So the technology now exists to read the codes from multiple vehicles of different makes on the same machine without changing cards. I believe the industry standardized the codes on the obd 2 systems so they can be read by one machine.

If not, most parts stores will read it for free.
