I have a 97 5.4 f150. I want more power out of it but i dont have the mouney for a super charger, but i wold like more power out of it. Because it's a dog. so what would be the best tuner or chip? Would that be something that would give me more power? Is it worth it? thanks...

This is what I posted earlier for another similar thread.
jholtz7 I was in the same predicament about what to get and after reading tons of posts about the xcal and edge, I think mojoe had a good one about both, I decided on the xcal from tp. I haven't got mine yet and the group buy certainly got my **** in gear to order it. A couple of things helped or swayed my decision. The first was my past experience, I had an 02 ranger and got onto rangerpowersports forum, everybody raved about Brian Herons (who now works for sct) ranger tuning, I decided all these people can't be wrong and got his flip chip. Made the truck so much more fun to drive. After buying another F150 I looked for more info an found f150online. This is prob the busiest forum I ever saw and like rps and Brian, tons of people on here swear by TP and Mikes tuning of the f150s. His involvement reminds me of the same great service and info I saw from Brian. Also after seeing a lot of posts about updates and probs etc. it shyed me away from the edge, I know its a new product and all but I NEED my truck too much to deal with trial and error. So now I'm trying to pass the time waiting for my xcal by responding to your thread. Hope this helps and just think theres only 3458 threads and 9458795 posts regarding tuners.
Right now there is group buy for the xcal from TP.

Hi Rolling,
Well, proper tuning is the single best bang for the buck performance enhancement - now that does NOT mean it's going to feel like a supercharger, simply that the best tuning is going to give you more power & performance than anything else for the same or less cost. So this is where most people start with their mods, due to it's superior bang for the buck value.
The difference between off the shelf type products and our custom tuning is that our custom tuning is going to provide higher power & performance gains, for a few reasons - first, we've specialized in performance tuning the F-150 longer than anyone else, 14+ years. Additionally, what we're doing is in-depth *custom* tuning, which cannot really be fairly compared to "off the shelf" types of tuning products, as they are not individual vehicle specific custom tunes.
Ultimately, this is a decision you need to make - now of course I'm going to sound biased, but what will get you the best results is our custom tuning, and right now is a great time to do that, as we are running a Group Buy on our custom tuning which ends this Friday, March 10th, at 6 pm Eastern - so if you want to take advantage of our Group Buy, you'll want to cal us with your order by then.
Typically, on those early 235 Hp 5.4 F-150's, we'll gain about 35 Hp in our performance tunes for premium gas, about 18 Hp on 87 octane - as well as clean up the shifting of the automatic transmission models, remove the top speed limiter, improve the overall driveability, and for most people, help improve the fuel mileage a bit as well. Now this is just to give you a rough idea of what usually happens on a well-maintained truck of your same model year & powertrain.
If you'd like to go over this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below & we can give you all the details on just what we can do for your specific truck, as well as other info such as what mods are best to do in what order in terms of bang for the buck, and just about anything else you'd like to know about improving the performance of these vehicles.
I hope that brief info helps, & best of luck whatever you decide!
