TQ management is killing my times...
TQ management is killing my times...
Okay, when I was N/A and Troyer tuned I was averaging 9.2 1/8 ET's...EASY on a 2.0 60ft. Well, my best the other day was a 9.10@75mph on a 2.19 60 ft. after my supercharger install. Yes, actually a better time considering the bad 60 ft but it should be more...alot more.
Well, I got my Powerjunk (Powerdyne) supercharger on and I have to admit there is much more power than when I was NA....IF you are going from a roll. I know there is more power because from a dead stop I have ZERO traction and from a 20mph roll I can kick down and feel the extra power and even break the tires loose. The extra power is non-negotiable...it's there.
What is killing me is the crap...and I mean CRAP Diablo tune sent with the kit. I seriously think they just did an air/fuel adjustment to get it running good enough. Nothing else !!! I can adjust the shift points, pressure...etc. But, the TQ management kicks in so bad on this thing that if I happen to even spin the tires or go from a dig it is worse than when I was stock. It needs custom tuned. Morning start ups are rough and doesnt get better until the engine warms up and then it runs smooth. From a dig, great 1st gear, pulls hard, 2nd gear and it is slower than when I had no mods at all. Called everyone and they all said the same thing...my problem was 1st-TQ management without a doubt. 2nd-Diablo custom tuning was crap for the new F-150's. 3rd-DIABLOS tune was CRAP !!! Dont mean to bash but 6 out of 8 custom tuners told me the same things and in that order.
Well, called a few places (custom tuners) down here in the Florida panhandle and everyone and they all said the same thing...my 1st problem was -TQ management without a doubt !!! 2nd-Diablo custom tuning was crap for the new F-150's. 3rd-DIABLOS tune was CRAP !!! Dont mean to bash but 6 out of 8 custom tuners told me the same things and in that order. They absolutely told me to STAY AWAY from Diablo when it comes to supercharger kits. Keep in mind these are Diablo custom tuner dealers too !! Of course, I had no choice when it came to the kit, but I know now that it's true. So, what was their recommendation for the 04-up F-150? None other than the X-cal 2....what a suprise? Anyway, talked to very respectable company and I will be getting custom tuned with the X-cal 2. He said no doubt the timing is off, the TQ managment is incorrect, and most likely the air-fuels are off too. WOW !!
Mike, I would make my way up there but I am on a budget and got orders overseas too. However, the company I am talking to highly recommended your tuning and company. I am not mentioning names because it always seems someone on here will swear them off as being terrible. So, with the results other guys have recieved from them I will be heading that way.
Just an FYI, apparently the X-cal 2 is THE BEST tuner for the 04-up 5.4L 3V F-150's...especially if supercharged.

Im not aware of any other full blown tuning software for our trucks. This is the PERFECT use of the xcal2 in my opinion. MT will be able to hook you up on that....
Just out of curiosity, why did you go with the powerdyne?

Dude, Was that you on the Martin Luther King Blvd today at noon? Do you have an airaid decal in the rear window? I thought my truck was quick, but who ever it was pulled away in 2nd with ease.
IF it is you I feel better knowing that your boosted. Mike will do a better job mailorder than others do in person. Give him a try.

Yeah, that was me..except I dont the Airaid intake anymore...just the sticker. When I made the corner I didnt kick down. I started off in 2nd gear at about 30mph and when I hit about 3500RPM I pulled away from you. Truck does that sometimes, if I am above 28mph it wont kick down into 1st gear.
I am running about the same times NOW as I was when I was not boosted. My tune sucks **** man. My best time non-boosted was 9.10@76.2mph. I ran a best of 9.19@75mph this weekend because of my tune and crappy 60ft times. Once I get a tune I will be much faster. Cold morning runs I hit 8's easy in the 1/8th mile.
Plus, that damn truck cover blew up when I started getting up there so I let off. LOL!!! If I kicked down I would have pulled a little harder down low.
Pretty nice truck BTW.
Anyway, I called Diablo and they even told me the baseline tune for the Powerdyne is crap. I went with Powerdyne because I am going to be leaving the country soon and I wanted a little fun for cheap. Powerdyne is cheap for a reason.
Oh, and I am running 3.73 posi with 295/45/18 tires (Toyo Proxes)...equates to about a 3.92 final ratio.

Also, my mail order X-cal 1 form Mike yielded great gains. I have been Troyer tuned. However, Mike refused to tune me with the X-cal 2 and a Powerdyne. I wish he would, cause even a mail order tune is better than this thing. It is terrible.
Actually, did some goofing off runs and at part throttle the power is very noticeable and much faster than part throttle when I was NA. It is WOT throttle that kills me. Once I go WOT the timing backs off and the truck falls on it's face.
Mike, if you' help me I'd take you up on that with an X-cal 2. But ya told me no..LOL!!! Dont blame you though. Alot of risk without real data logging and accurate air/fuels. Cause you will be tuning with ambient air temps as well.

your Truck runs sweet. It will be pure sick when you get it tuned. Maybe you will be able to make a road trip to one of Mikes Dyno Days. I hope to this summer. I just need to find a buyer for one of my kidneys so I can get a blower
I will be sure to watch out for that Blue Terror around FWB. Are you running the 1/8th in Holt?

hellbound - my set up is a 4.6 with air/air intercooling, 90 mm mass air , 42# injectors,Densos with the other usual bolt on stuff. If you plan on running an FMU, Mike told me that they are a POS and not to use one, could be an issue.
Hi Hellbound,
Just thought I;d drop by this thread.............
What has to be understood is that only a fool would attempt to tune a 5.4 3V with a blower via mail order with no data - which is why I won't do that.
Please don't misunderstand, we value your business, and I would LOVE to try to help you with your situation, and your present tuning does indeed suck, I know. So yes, we can easily make it run better.
Though I must point out my normal diatribe about how no centrifugal supercharger has any business on any street-driven truck, as there is no power gain on part throttle, and no boost unless you are at higher rpms and heavy throttle - not only that, but there is a problem with controlling the bypass value due to the torque-predictive nature of this system. SO it's going to take a good bit of work to get this thing working to it's best potential, and that is not done via mail order with no data. A successful supercharging conversion requires not only big power when the hammer is down, but also these trucks need instant part-throttle torque - otherwise it's really not worth supercharging other than for drag racing only (and I know you do that, of course!), as you do not spend even as little as 2% of your time at WOT.
By the way - I got a notification of a private message here, but I messed up and did not get to see it - so if you would like to go over this or anything else with me, please do give us a call so you and I can speak personally, as I'd like to find a way to help you out with your situation if at all possible.
Thanks for your post & your support, & I hope to speak with you soon!

Well, I did cure ONE issue with this thing. That was a hardware issue. The tensioner bracket is out of alignment with the rest of the pulley system and my belt was rubbing on the tensioner pulley and no doubt dropping boost considerably. Had belt dust and belt shavings in the engine compartment. After I got a new sturdy pulley and fabricated some stuff, it released the tension and there is definitely more power. After I fixed the alignment the belt was tighter than before and I was now getting belt slip. So, I tightened it even more, eliminated belt slip and the truck runs better.
However, you can tell the power is just not what it should be. Shifting is terrible, and dont even think about spinning the tires cause the TQ management will ruin your acceleration quickly.
One thing to be noted, the Powerdyne kit surprisingly comes up to over 3 lbs boost at just over 2000 rpm and then gradually increases from there to just a hair above 6 psi at 5400 rpm (my set shift points). Actually Mike, part throttle is very good. Not arguing you here, but just from driving it, that is my experience. Once I WOT, you can tell the timiing is pulled and CRAAAAAPPPPP !!!! LOL!!!
Mike, I will call you once I get ALL of my gauges hooked up. I have a boost gauge hooked up ghetto style until my gauge pod gets here. Then the A/F goes in along with a new tach. I will get back with you after I clear some stuff up and try to get some readings down before I jump out my **** and get ahead of myself.
Thanks Mike.
