Xcal2 tune Questions/options

Hello all;

I am looking to join in on the group purchase @ Troyer Performance (thanks Mike and company).

I am undeceided on what tunes to request.

Most of the time, I just drive to work and I was thinking of an 87 performance tune. I also haul firewood maybe three times a year (1 cord per load) and the other towing I do is with my 72 Mach 1.
So I was thinking of an 87 tow tune for firewood and a 93 tow tune for Mustang hauling. What would current Troyer customers suggest? (feel free to chime in Mike)

My next question is regarding a new cold air intake system. Currently I have the stock intake tube and a K&N filter. Will a different intake tube help? if yes, MUST it be a K&N or is there a lesser version/model that will benefit my application?

All opinions are welcome.

Thank you

You tow with your mach 1

No but seriously, call Mike and talk to him. He's quite informative and will help you decide whats best for you, whether its custom 93 or 87. Forwarning, charge your cellphone in advance, he's got alot to say!

I ordered
93 Tow
93 Proformance
87 Proformance

as far as intake I run a AF1 ( Mike has them also, and maybe combo the deal..but you will have to talk to him about that, not sure with the group deal) Some say they are a loud intake, it sounds like a 4b carb when you get in to it....I love It....sounds GREAT.....

I would recommend Magnaflow for the other end....and i see you have that taken care of....

Hi. For HAULING your firewood in the bed of the truck, you dont need a tow tune; you can keep in on the performance tune. However, the tunes you picked would probably be your best bet (assuming you REALLY want to run 87 octane as your main fuel). Even though you would only need a tow tune to pull your Stang and want to use 93 for that, there might be a time when you have 1/3 a tank or more of 87 and need to tow. In that case you can just stick in on your 87 tow and go.
IF you can swing running 93 octane all the time, your probably going to be much happier with that. A 93 tow and 93 performance and you would be set. Throw in a 87 performance incase you cant get ahold of any 93, and then if you STILL have to tow (and have that 87 in), you can put the stock tune back in and go like that. I believe that is the way Mike usually suggest to do it unless you are wanting to run primarily 87.

Theres tons of ways to do it though.

So I just ordered my XCal2. Never even got a chance to talk to Mike. So much for the detailed discussion and consultation! The only conversation I had was with an "order taker". I ordered 87 Perf, 87 Tow, and 91 Perf.

I ordered my tune as part of the group buy. I choose a 87 economy tune, a 87 "tow" tune and a 92 octane (all that is available where I live) tow tune.

I picked the 87 economy tune for the few big road trips I take per year. I chose the 87 tune for when I'm in BFE and the local gas station doesn't offer higher octanes, and the 92 octane tune for daily driving. All of them are "tow safe" so that I don't have to worry about changing tunes when I need to tow something.

One thing to ask yourself is how much more expensive the 93 octane is over the 87. Where I live, the higher octane is 20 cents per gallon more expensive. It has always amazed me how much people get scared of the higher octane when gas is expensive....When in reality it is only costing you maybe $20 more per month. In my opinion, I'll pay the $20 and have the extra gonads for when I need it. If you feel the same way, then don't worry with a 87 tune for daily driving.

Just my 2 cents.

Regarding cold air intakes and exhausts....I'll have a dyno report on Friday with my results. I say go for it anyway, the sound is awesome.

I am still trying figure out what things I want to run. I tow off and on a year. I am probably going to go with a 93 Performance, 93 Tow, and 87 Performance. Do u loose gas mileage with the 87 performance? Anyone have any ideas? Most my driving is round trips back and fourth to school every other week, sometimes more. I am still trying to figure out before I call Mike. Anyone please chime in. Will I need the 93 Tow on when I tow the jet ski??? I also tow a boat but tow jet ski a lot?

You should gain mileage with any of the tunes, if you keep your foot out of it of course.

Im not sure about towing a jet ski on the perf. tune. Although they dont weigh much, there is still that extra wind drag and towing load. If you do, get an EGT gauge and watch that gauge good.

For details like this, it really does require a quick call to us to go over this properly. But I'll give you some basic info now, & hope that helps...........

Briefly -

you do NOT need to run a "towing" tune to haul a load of wood in the bed - you can load your bed right up to it's maximum on-board weight rating and still use our "performance" tunes.

If you are going to be *towing*, then you need to use a "towing" tune - end of story. However, for those who do not want to frequently switch, you can always run a towing tune all the time.

Last - no, an 87 octane performance tune is not going to cause any loss in fuel economy - in fact, *none* of our tunes are going to cause you to lose MPG - the only thing that can cause that are low fuel quality and/or a heavy right foot.

That's it for "the basics," & I hope that helps - for anyone that needs further advice, we'll be more than happy to help you, just give us a call at our number listed below.

Enjoy your weekend!

Hi "The Saint,"

I went back and re-read your post once I had a bit more time, and from what you describe, what I would suggest is pretty much along the lines you were thinking...

87 Octane Performance - and you can still haul your load of wood in the bed, as long as you do not exceed your truck's maximum rated bed load limit.

93 Octane Towing- since you will be hauling a Mustang, and it will be on a trailer, this means you really need a towing tune, and you'd want maximum power when you do that towing (at least, I would ).

And then last, a 93 octane performance tune.

This would give you an end results where, between your stock factory tune and your 3 custom tunes, you have 2 tunes for towing, one for each level of octane, and then tow performance tunes, one for each level of octane (and be "each level of octane," I mean regular & premium gas, basically).

I think that is what would best serve your needs.

Oh, and congrats on having a 1972 Mach 1 to tow around - you know, those big-bodied Mach 1's are getting very rare, and are *beautiful* when done right - best of luck with that car, it's definitely a keeper!

I hope that info helps you a bit better,
