you tell me....

ok, i hear all the rif raf about the edge and troyer tunes and how everyone could never spin their stock tires from a stand still etc...i dont know if this belongs here, but i just put on a set of 35x12.50x18 cooper discover mt tires and can break em loose for about a foot from a stand still, and can smoke them purty good power breakin it. now, maybe its just my truck, but say another guys truck couldnt do this at all, if we both had the evolution per say, would my truck be faster etc..????

There are SOOOO many factors that allow your to spin the tires. Off idle power is only one factor. If you put tire dressing on your tires, you could spin your tires forever. Im not sure of the traction rating on those tires, but i could spin my contis much better than my bfg all terrains. That's just a few examples.

Do you have the standard rear-end or the limited slip? What gear ratio do you have?

Gobra, the reason you can spin conti's better than bfg at's is that the BFG's are a real soft compound tire. The BFG's won't last as long, but they'll track much better when really needed. When I had my 92 4x2 Explorer, I put it nose to nose with a buddys 4x4 93 explorer. He had cheapo sears tires and I had BFG Trail TA's. He dropped into 4 low and I still pushed him backwards.

Not everyone realizes how different the tires are really is what makes the breaking of traction from a dead stop feasable or not.

ok, thats understandable, just for the record i have limited slip, 3.73 4x4, and how do i know if the tires are soft or not, they are a MT tire, so im guessing they are going to be a little softer then a road tire...

Hi Bofer,

I'm delighted that you can spin your tires -

But I must confess that we've always said whether a truck can spin it's tires off the line or not is really not an accurate way for everyone to judge the results of any performance modification, as there are just far too many variables for that to be a relevant "standard" for everyone to judge their results by - including not only the obvious things like even among the BFG 18" tires on the 2004 & newer F-150's, just in that tire there are 3 different compounds - but also on factors such as the individual torque converter in that one truck, and other things - like the fact that there are numerous different tire & gear ratio combos, as well as 3000 lb of potential weight difference from the lightest to the heaviest trucks, differences in local fuel qualities, and so much more............ this is what makes it very difficult to make any direct comparisons to anyone else's vehicle, there are just too many different option levels, etc., to say nothing of normal production line variances from one vehicle to the next.

It's not a fair comparison to make between an off-the-shelf product and our custom tuning, as we go much further in depth into the PCM's programming with our custom tuning than any off the shelf product ever has. We do more work on part-throttle torque alone than darn near all the other "name" chipmakers combined - but again, it's not fair to compare custom tuning to anything that is off-the-shelf - it's apples & oranges. For example, we carry the Edge product as well, and it's great for what it is - but you don't find it installed in our vehicles (other than for occasional testing), as that is not what provides us with the best results - our custom tuning does that.

That is NOT a "knock" on any of them, please don't misunderstand. It's just that this is what we specialize in, where companies making off-the-shelf products are concerned with getting out as many different products as possible, so they never have the sheer amount of R&D that we have into this one platform - they can't, and that is why a number of them hire us to help them.

It's easy for a highly skilled tuner to make good power gains - but it's an altogether different matter to make the maximum safe & sustainable gains - which is why we do sweep & step testing, and monitor things like EGT's (exhaust gas temperatures), which almost nobody does that on gasoline engines these days.

Most of this I'm sure you probably already know from previous posts of ours here, etc., so this is just some quick general FYI for you - if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, feel free to give us a call.

I'm glad you are able to spin those 35" tires, & good luck with your truck!
