8 mile to the gallon!

I just got back from a trip to Florida with 3 other guys towing my center console and the best milage I got was 8.18 gal/mile and I was running between 65-75 mph....needless to say I was a little shocked. I have an 05 screw 5.4 with an air raid intake/SIDO flow maters/Xcal2 (87 tow tune used for this trip)...my boat weighs about 4000 lbs pus the 4 of us is another 800 lbs...just thought I should get better than 8 miles to the gallon... So my question is....anyone else getting the bad milage - any I expecting too much.

Probably expecting too much.

I only get 12.5 not towing anything, so adding another 4000# I imagine would kill the gas milage.

Thats probably about right. I get about 11.3 towing a little enclosed motorcycle trailer with about 800 pounds in it at 75mph (creates a lot of drag). F-150's aren't primarly made for towing. There's a whole lot of posts about gas mileage and towing in the towing and hauling section. Check it out. I remember somebody on there with a boat but can't remember what mileage he got.

Think of it this way....you might have gotten 8.8 mpg...but it got you there and back didn't it

Pulling my travel trailer, 6000 lbs., @ 70-75, I got 7.5 mpg. Slowed down to 60 and it went up to 10 mpg. This was before the XCal2 was installed, I haven't pulled it since the tuning but I wouldn't expect much better.

Yep,Thats about right.I get 10-11mpg pulling 1800 lbs at 60.Seems that anything over 65 mph really takes away from the mileage towing or not.

You guys are scaring me. Just traded my '01 4.2 4x4 for an '05 5.4 4x4. The old truck got 17 mpg pulling a 2,000 pound tent trailer to colorado and back; the average for the whole trip of over 3,000 miles. I'm afraid of what the 5.4 is going to do. I'm getting 16 mpg empty right now with winter oxygenated fuel.

i got 7 pulling a 21 foot prowler camper, going 65 with od off. i had to stop and get gas every 120 to 150 miles. i think the wind resistance was a big factor.
