An XCal2 is a programmer made by SCT. What it does is basically rewrites your ECU, sort of. Say if you drive an automatic, this would help a lot. You can change your shift points, shift firmness, idle rpms, neutral rpms. You can change your rev limiter and remove your speed limiter. All sorts of stuff like that. You can buy them from several places. The most popular would be troyer for $499, but i bought mine from VMP for $379. It all depends on where you buy it and how they "custom" tune it for you.

ok so they would actually pre-tune it before it is given to the owner and what then? you simply place it in a conector in the engine?

Hi kstonelb86;

And don't forget to consider:

It's NOT prudent to shop for Quality Custom tuning based solely upon the price.

The quality of Custom tuning varies wildly.

It is NOT something anyone with the license, the software, a supply of blank Xcals and a computer can do, despite what you read elsewhere. This takes true commitment, passion, skill and raw talent , plus a LOT of actual experience to do correctly and produce safe & sustainable power & driveability gains.

I would recommend going with the most experienced & highly regarded tuner for the Ford f150 platform - that would be Mike Troyer.

And remember, Mike's XCal2 comes with 3 Custom tunes, free tune refinement within 60 days upon receipt of datalogging info, and World-Class customer service and support. Perhaps not the cheapest, but without doubt, the Best.

Do some Searching here, ask questions, talk to Mike.
Best of luck in your decision.

Cheers
Grog

Hi kstonelb86,

The XCal 2 is just a blank device that allows us to load our custom tuning into it, so that the vehicle owner can then load our custom tuning into their vehicle for much better performance, driveability, shifting characteristics, removal of the top sped limiter, and much more. It also has complete manufacturer-specific enhanced-parameters diagnostic capability, as well as the highest speed datalogger available.

The most important thing to remember is that it's not the XCal 2 that modifies your truck - what modifies your truck, and thus what actually matters the most by far, is *who* is actually doing the tuning that is loaded into the XCal 2 - don't think that all XCal 2's are the same in that regard, as they aren't, not by a long shot. What actually determines the results in your vehicle is the actual kill & experience level of the person doing the actual tuning.

For example, most people here who want to modify their F-150 for more performance come to us for our custom tuning, as we have specialized in performance tuning the F-150 longer than anyone else, for over 14 years, so we have more R&D into the tuning of these vehicles and modifying their performance in other ways than others in this business - and we're well known for our results, as can quickly be seen by reading some of the posts here.

An important note - because you are a registered member of F-150 Online, you also get a special discount that is not reflected in the pricing shown on our web site - this is just one of many reasons why we ask people not to post pricing from our web site here, as it's not applicable for F-150 Online members for our tuning products - so for your special discount on the XCalibrator 2 as a registered member of F-150 Online, and to get the best F-150 custom tuning available, give us a call at our number listed below when you get a chance, & we'll be happy to go over all the details with you so you can make your decision from a fully informed position.

In your situation, when towing, one of the most important things needed to provide better towing capability is not just more peak horsepower, but also to get the highest possible amount of torque on part-throttle as well - we do quite a bit of part-throttle work, and have a dyno specially equipped to do part-throttle work so hat we can get the most torque out of these engines. We have also doe quite a bit of refinement on our towing-compatible tunes, for example, as they require different transmission characteristics as compared to a pure "performance" oriented tune that does not have towing capability.

As MGDFan pointed out in his response, we provide a set of 3 different custom tunes set up any way each individual vehicle owner prefers - so you can have both towing and performance tunes, and have them for different levels of octane as well - that way you have the ultimate in flexibility and capability, so the truck can do everything it was designed to be able to do from the factory, only more, and better.

This is just some quick brief info - to go over this in proper detail, etc., please feel free to give us a call and we'll go over everything with you thoroughly, and with no sales pressure, so you can give it some thought.

Thanks for your post, & best of luck whatever you decide!

Hi again;

For your first question, please use the excellent Search features on this Board. You get tons of results. Sound familiar?

Short answer: technically No, but if you Search, you'll find folks having problems with their Dealers denying, or threatening to deny, warranty coverage. Jump in.

For your second question: Please rephrase, and be more specific, 'cause as worded, I dunno WTF you are talking about

Cheers
