What chip/programmer for my 97 4.2L ?
I have a 97 F150 4.2L V6 / 4x4 / 5 spd and I was wondering what is out there. I don't need anything fancy - I am mainly looking for more power, but also the recalibration for tires/gears option.
Hi drewschbagg,
Well, the first thing you need to know is that because you have a pre-1999 F-150, it is not possible to recalibrate the speedometer via changes in the PCM's tuning - in 1997 & 1998 F-150's, that must be done by a simple change of the speedometer gear in the tailshaft of the transmission, which is cheap & easy to do. In automatics, that also restores shift point accuracy as well as speedometer & odometer accuracy.
Another aspect of the 4.2 V6 F-150's is that a lot of them cannot even go open loop from the factory, and that requires a custom tune to take care of properly - the nice thing about that is, those trucks make larger than "normal" power gains as a result.
There are a couple of ways to handle this - the cheapest way is our multi-program custom-tuned chip, the 6600 - that will get you a set of 4 different custom tunes set up any way you like, that you can change by simply turning a ****. Or, if you prefer to have more features and a simpler installation, have us do a set of 3 custom tunes in the XCalibrator 2, which also has full manufacturer-specific diagnostics as well as datalogging & many other features.
the hot tip is to give us a call at our number listed below when you get a chance, and we'll be happy to go over this with you in proper detail - we'll also be happy to help you with the math to determine how many teeth you will need on the new speedo gear, and go over with you exactly how that is done - you'll be happy with how easy & inexpensive it is to correct the speedo in your 1997 truck!
I hope that info helps, & best of luck whatever you decide!
