Better MPG with a tuner?
Better MPG with a tuner?
I have a 5.4 4x4 Expidition. The mileage is about 14 running around town. Would a tuner help the MPG any. Maybe a catback exhaust in conjunction with the tuner. It is a 2005 model with the 3 valve, sure like the power compared to the 2002 5.4 I had.
Tuners basically are for better performance but improved fuel economy is not uncommon. I average 16mpg plus all local driving with a 04 Screw. I got an XCal2 custom tuned by Troyer Performance and I use the 93-octane performance tune exclusively because I love the power, but I also have an 87-octane performance tune and a tow-preferred tune too

14mpg for 12,000 miles per year = 857gallons. @ $2.50/gal = $2143
15mpg for 12,000 miles per year = 800gallons. @ $2.50/gal = $2000, savings: $143
16mpg for 12,000 miles per year = 750gallons. @ $2.50/gal = $1875, savings: $268
Even if you gain 2mpg it's going to take you more than a year to pay off a tuner. However, if you do realize some MPG gains _and_ you're enjoying the extra power, then it's all worth it
I picked up almost 2 MPG with the Edge running premium fuel over my Superchips 1714 premium settings. I was getting around 16 (a little lower usually) . Now i am getting around 18 ( alittle lower usually too). This is mostly hwy going 80+ most of the time.
Most people get a tuner for performance but if all you’re looking for is better fuel economy then a TP custom tuned XCal2 is a viable option. Mike does custom tunes, upon request, specifically for fuel economy for any octane but IMO a fuel efficiency tune would be a waste of money; give me power for my green

If you paid $30,000 for a vehicle and only got 85% of the power and mileage, you would/should be doing the same as the rest of us.
I want a little bass too but im not going to put 2 16 in woofers in my truck. Your point makes no sense to me.....

opie71, maybe you’re missing the point a little. I’m not trying to race sports cars, I just want a faster than average truck that is dependable with the same engine longevity as stock. Mikes’ tunes give that to me

So driving 30K a year I might save $358. I have not tried any of the tuners other than the Edge on a PowerStroke, those are worth the bucks for the thrill. I had a 02 5.4 with a SuperChips blue chip, the kind the piggybacks onto the ECU, not to impressed with that. It also had K&N FIPK, and a 2 chamber SIDO Flowmaster with 2.25 tailpipes. I think the stock exhaust is a better setup that what a local muffler shop can do, with the old style pipe benders that kink, and shrink the bends. Maybe a catback kit would be a better, although more expensive route.
So let me try this. I do a lot of in town driving, as well as hiway driving. In the summer we travel to several different lakes anywhere from 60 miles to 300 mile trips one way pulling a 22 ft boat. Towing my MPG goes from decent to awful. Will a towing tune help the MPG or just help the power. Also I do not want to run anything over the 86/87 octane with the price of gas like it is now.
I like the idea of increased power, but not at the sacrifice of MPG.
Thanks for all the replies, good helpful info here.
