Better MPG with a tuner?

I have a 5.4 4x4 Expidition. The mileage is about 14 running around town. Would a tuner help the MPG any. Maybe a catback exhaust in conjunction with the tuner. It is a 2005 model with the 3 valve, sure like the power compared to the 2002 5.4 I had.

Tuners basically are for better performance but improved fuel economy is not uncommon. I average 16mpg plus all local driving with a 04 Screw. I got an XCal2 custom tuned by Troyer Performance and I use the 93-octane performance tune exclusively because I love the power, but I also have an 87-octane performance tune and a tow-preferred tune too

i didnt see any difrence, but others have, if all you are buying this for is a MPG or two more, i think it would be better to put the money towards gas

I'd agree - put it this way...

14mpg for 12,000 miles per year = 857gallons. @ $2.50/gal = $2143
15mpg for 12,000 miles per year = 800gallons. @ $2.50/gal = $2000, savings: $143
16mpg for 12,000 miles per year = 750gallons. @ $2.50/gal = $1875, savings: $268

Even if you gain 2mpg it's going to take you more than a year to pay off a tuner. However, if you do realize some MPG gains _and_ you're enjoying the extra power, then it's all worth it

I picked up almost 2 MPG with the Edge running premium fuel over my Superchips 1714 premium settings. I was getting around 16 (a little lower usually) . Now i am getting around 18 ( alittle lower usually too). This is mostly hwy going 80+ most of the time.

My mileage picked up with the Edge as well, and if you use the math from earlier in the post only substituting 40k miles a year like I drive...things add up a bunch quicker.

Most people get a tuner for performance but if all you’re looking for is better fuel economy then a TP custom tuned XCal2 is a viable option. Mike does custom tunes, upon request, specifically for fuel economy for any octane but IMO a fuel efficiency tune would be a waste of money; give me power for my green

I just have a quick question....like has been mentioned before....why not just get a turbo installed if your really looking 4 pwr? So your eng wears out quicker...who cares. These newer trks are heavy, not a sports car, not designed for racing. Tires are speedrated to only go so fast for so long before the dependibility of these tires are shot. Ive been looking at the ongoing battles of the edge sayers and the tp sayers...I think its all very comical. Just my $.02 though, I know its not worth it for me to use 93 octane to gain more pwr and mpg, it just doesnt add up the cost savings. Like has been mentioned many many times, a lead foot and gunning the trk, is going to decrease your mpg, wear on your tires, thus costing more in the long run. Heck, get you a sports car, put a lift kit on it, and be done with it.

If you paid $30,000 for a vehicle and only got 85% of the power and mileage, you would/should be doing the same as the rest of us.

I want a little bass too but im not going to put 2 16 in woofers in my truck. Your point makes no sense to me.....

opie71, maybe you’re missing the point a little. I’m not trying to race sports cars, I just want a faster than average truck that is dependable with the same engine longevity as stock. Mikes’ tunes give that to me

So driving 30K a year I might save $358. I have not tried any of the tuners other than the Edge on a PowerStroke, those are worth the bucks for the thrill. I had a 02 5.4 with a SuperChips blue chip, the kind the piggybacks onto the ECU, not to impressed with that. It also had K&N FIPK, and a 2 chamber SIDO Flowmaster with 2.25 tailpipes. I think the stock exhaust is a better setup that what a local muffler shop can do, with the old style pipe benders that kink, and shrink the bends. Maybe a catback kit would be a better, although more expensive route.

So let me try this. I do a lot of in town driving, as well as hiway driving. In the summer we travel to several different lakes anywhere from 60 miles to 300 mile trips one way pulling a 22 ft boat. Towing my MPG goes from decent to awful. Will a towing tune help the MPG or just help the power. Also I do not want to run anything over the 86/87 octane with the price of gas like it is now.

I like the idea of increased power, but not at the sacrifice of MPG.

Thanks for all the replies, good helpful info here.

I did my research, and knew about the power and mileage..I also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express the nite before I did my research and bought my trk. If I was concerned about power....sports car....mileage...a hybrid, Id strip the vehicle down to nothing, and replace the frame and engine with aluminum and replace the sheet metal with plastic. Im also not one to go to 3 different stores to save a dollar either, but as long as everyone that has these tuners are happy....so be it. Cuz guess what, im completely happy with my truck, cept that it rained yesterday and I need to get it washed. and these tuners wont wash or detail my truck for me. while we are on the subject, how many actually did their research before buying their vehicles about weight, power and mpg? or was it after the fact? and dont be a hater!!!!

Nobody's hatin round here (at least not me). If you are happy with your truck, great! I have always modified my vehicles in some fashion, but that's me. I could have the lightning motor in my truck and i still would tinker with it!(ummmm, lightning motor ) I know it's not a sportscar and never will be, but if i want to pull out in a busy intersection without fear of a dead pedal acceleration rate that can be timed with a sun dial, i know what i need to do...

Umm...if your having trouble getting thru an intersection.....u probably need to get your vehicle checked out. Unless your one of those that have to try and make it thru the yellow lite and then turns red on ya right at the intersection.
