Superchips bummer
Superchips bummer
I had worked out a deal with a co-worker for a used 1714...however my wife surprises me with one for Christmas! I thought this is awesome...went out this morning...plugged it in..all was going great, very simple to use..made it all the way to the end of the retune...says "error call superchips" code #exxx...so I put the stock tune back in. Well to say the least I'm very disappointed! I'm going to try to return it I guess. I get my money back I'm going to call Mike...I would not recommend a 1714!!
Hi Fordworker,
While we would of course prefer to see you using our Troyer Performance custom tuning as that will get you the best results, usually those problems are very simple, and only mean things like, just for one example, maybe your vehicle is equipped with a PCM revision that was not released publicly at the time your particular 1714 was made, and it simply needs an update - which the manufacturer will do free for you.
Or, maybe you tried using it in freezing temperatures, which can cause a failure to flash the PCM.
Or maybe there really is a problem with the 1714 (rare, but it can happen), but you do have a Lifetime warranty on it, and whatever it is, it would be taken care of for you - it's just disappointing that it didn't fire right up for you, I know.
I just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know that whatever the issue is, the manufacturer gives the original purchaser a Lifetime warranty for as long as they own the vehicle the unit was purchased for, so they will rectify any issue you have. The one downside is that this time of year, normally Superchips Inc lets their employees off from Christmas thru New Year's, so they may not be open until I think it's January 2nd or 3rd.
If you tried to flash the PCM with the 1714 at freezing temperatures, one thing you can try is this - first, make sure the 1714 is at full room temperature - if it's at freezing temps, this will take several hours to get it fully warmed up inside. Then, before trying to flash the PCM, just start the engine up and let the vehicle idle in a stationary position long enough to come up to full operating temperature - which takes a good 20 minutes or more of idling from a cold start in say, 30 degree temps just for example, even though the coolant temp gauge will read normal before then - the idea being, you want the PCM to warm up from the heat rising up from the engine so that it is well above freezing. Then bring your 1714 directly from your house where it's up to your normal room temperature, shut off the truck, plug in the 1714, and attempt to flash the PCM. That is one way to sometimes get around the PCM not taking a flash in freezing temps. Now admittedly, I'm grasping at straws a bit here for you, this would be a technique to try only if you tried flashing the PCM in freezing temperatures.
Yes, it is possible that there is something actually wrong with your 1714, but you do have a Lifetime warranty on it, so the bottom line is, this can ultimately be taken care of, though I know it's aggravating here at Christmas time!
At any rate, I hope some of this info helps you in some way, and I wish you the very best whatever you decide, my friend. Hang in there, one way or another this WILL work out for you!

As always...thank you very much Mike for the info. I'm just bummed as you say...that superchips is closed..I wanted so much to try this baby out. Mike the temp here today is 37 degrees, do you think that may cause a problem?
Hey fordworker. I responded to your email. I really enjoyed my 1714. But now I have an Xcal and I REALLY enjoy it. The main differences I noticed between the two tuners are: 1. The mid-range pulling power from the Xcal tune is amazing. The truck behaves great untill you hit the magic spot. When you push the pedal just far enough anywhere between 35-55 with the truck in 3rd gear, the way the truck PULLS is amazing. 2. The shifting patterns are alot better. It doesnt slam into gear or down shift when it ISNT supposed to anymore.
Hopefully sometime soon, I can figure up an excuse to go back to Virginia to have it tuned again (Thanks Mike).
I hope your 1714 woes work out for the best. Good Luck!

Hmmmmm......A little more info might be helpful.
What tune were you trying to load?
Did you take the Superchips "default" settings? If not, what did you change?
You say you got this error at the "end" of the tuning load?
You have to be sure when to turn the ignition on and off. Easy to skip that part.
You did pull the fuel pump fuse, yes?
Since you were able to *reload* the stock tune without problems, I'd guess that the temperature was not the cause.

Well..I was loading the 87 tune for now..besides I want to try them all. I used the sc settings, however I changed the tire size and raised the speed and rev limiters. It was weird...it saved the stock tune, loaded the sc tune all the way to the very end..100%...then it gave me the "call superchips" error???? Thank God it allowed me to load the stock tune back in! I may fill up with 93 octane and try once more with the hi perf tune...the whole deal just pisses me off..got a broke $%^# tuner for Christmas and they are closed all week..kinda bummed...plus I'm a bit paranoid to even try it again...what if next time it won't even reload the stock tune.

If I could return it I would and tell my wife I'll pay the extra and get a Troyer tune!

Personally, I'd try a reload, again. I'd try the 87 again, though you could try one of the others, too. You could take it back to stock should the 91 load up with 87 in the tank. Just take ALL defaults this time. You can always go back and adjust once you're sure the tuner is OK.
Make sure you use the "warming" procedures as stated in the above post.
Good luck,
Joey

I've seen something like it. May have been the same error, I can't remember.
What happened was the guy was trying to load the tune without turning the ignition on. I believe it was the step to do just before the actual load. He didn't have the manual open and just forgot, he said. Actually did it two or three times and was at the point you are. Thinking that he was gonna have to call SCT. Then he got the manual out and we went throught it step by step.
Anyhoo, I think it was the same error you described.
Did you try a re-load, yet?

This was the exact problem I had. My situation was that I originally had the 91 perf tune installed and the truck ran great. Well, I decided to take the truck in to the dealership for rough idle. Well, I read in a forum here that if you take your vehicle back to the dealership, put your stock tune back. So I did. Well, dealership stated that it needed to be REFLASHED, so they done so. Reflash did not fix Idle problem. I get home and install 1714 tuner. Well, it does not work because like SUPERCHIPS DISTRIBUTOR states the new firmware code was released after the tuner was built so it needs to be upgraded. I sent it in and got tuner back. When I had gotten it back I attempted to install tune.
I ran into the same problem you are having. It runs flashes the PCM and all that good stuff. So, I get the point where it says it is checking for DTC's to clear and I get an error code "E5F". I sent it back again and still waiting for it to come back. Looks like SC is on vacation.
GOOD LUCK.
