Xcal or 6600 for 2003
I have a 2003 SCrew and am very close to ordering the tuning from Troyer. The only mod to the truck at this time, is a SI-DO FlowMaster DF 40 series muffler-(Thanks to my crew at work for an early Christmas present). When I purchase, I will get the AF-1 and the custom tuning in one purchase. At this time, I am leaning toward purchasing the 6600. After reading the many posts raving about Troyer's tuning I am left with a few unanswered questions that will help me to make my final decision.
1. I realize the advantages of the Xcal over the 6600, but I do not have a laptop and don't anticipate doing the data logging. (I also realize the disadvantage of omitting this step.) Bearing this in mind, what advantage would the X-cal give me to justify the difference in price?
2. Does my 2003 model have the same problem of running too lean from the factory as the 2004 and up models do that I read so much about on the forum?
If TP was closer to my home (Kemp, TX), I would let them install and tune the X-Cal & AF-1 for proper tuning no questions asked. But since they are not, I would have to data log and do the dyno pulls on my own and send the info to TP in order to properly fine tune my truck. I am not sure that I would even know what info I would be asking for from the dyno runs and after reading about all the inconsistencies of dyno readings, would Mike be getting the info that he needed in order to fine tune the vehicle anyways?
Any feedback from you guys heading me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
It also amazes me, that Mike, being the guru that he is
, is able to read apparently all of these posts and find time to respond to those that he deems appropriate. Another plus of dealing with TP. I have spoken to one of the reps at TP to begin ironing out the details of my purchase and I would like to add that their customer service so far has been all that this forum speaks of.
With all that said, I eagerly await your responses. And a Merry Christmas to all reading this post and to all at Troyer Performance. Thanks for all that you do for all of us here.

Hi Green,
No, your 2003 does NOT have the problem of running lean from the factory that some 2004 & newer F-150's do, but that still does NOT mean that you do not have to datalog when being tuned, don't make that assumption as that would be wrong - you always need to datalog, or you are NOT properly tuned, and won't be making max power.
I would go with the 9400 XCal 2 over the 6600 any day of the week, period - it's simply no contest, because the features you have with the XCal 2, the built-in on board datalogging and everything else by far outweigh any other considerations - ,and you STILL need to datalog, even though it's not a 2004 or newer truck.SO if you use the 6600, then you need to buy an additional datalogging package that is capable of operating at high data rates (and there is NOTHING else as quick as the XCal 2), so it's really not worth considering - the ONLY time to go with the 6600 chip is if you are going to spray nitrous oxide, where you want *instant* program changes instead of a 2 minute program change.
Every vehicle being tuned needs to be datalogged, otherwise it is not being properly tuned, and yo have no idea what the A/F's are, and what else is going on- so don't think about skipping the datalogging, it's just too easy to do with the newest XCal 2's and the latest version o the software that was just released day before yesterday.
What you really need to do is to call us to discuss all of this, as it's far too detailed for me to sit & type it all out, just as you noted I don't have the time to do that - we'd never get anything done if I did that.
We'll be open again starting Tuesday, we're closed today thru Monday for Christmas, so from Tuesday on just give us a call & we can go over anything you like.
Thanks very much for your post, & we look forward to hearing from you - and in the meantime, Merry Christmas!
