MAF sensor question for Mike Troyer

Hey Mike, I just got the Xcal 93 performance tunes loaded on my truck and I love them. But, I have thought about adding an upgraded MAF sensor to my truck. My question is: Is it worth it? Would I have to get my tunes "upgraded" because of this add-on? What is the best kind? What kind of power gains could I expect in conjunction to my tuner?

Any responses other than Mike would be appreciated as well.

Here's 2 cents worth of anecdotal info.

I payed about $ 270 for a new and better maf, and didn't notice any change. When I sent in my work sheets for my XC2, I was told it would be better if I put the stock one back on.
I just bought a new 90mm maf for my s/c upgrade from Troyer, and it is a Ford maf....I see a pattern here.

the only reason you would need a new MAF is if your stock one is maxed out at the upper RPM, i believe(dont quote me) this happend at 350 HP at the flywheel, if this is the case you would also need new injectors because those max out at the same time as the MAF, and any gains would be in the upper end of the RPM scale, i went with a 90mm MAF off a lightning and ford racing 24# fuel injectors, and yes this requires custom tuning, good luck

Hey Bigtruck...

I have a quick question for you... You installed a lightning MAF, and #24 injectors... Now, I was pretty sure that the Lightning MAF is calibrated for the #42 injectors, not 24lbers, so is that why you had to do some custom tuning? I would say that if somone needed to ugrade injectors for a non supercharged setup, to keep up with fuel needs, wouldnt it be smarter and probably cheaper to get the 24lb injectors and order a MAF that is calibrated for that specific size injectors, such as a custom Granatelli maf? Did you do the tuning yourself with a programmer, or have a shop get in there? The reason Im asking so many questions is because I am upgrading my MAF to the L's 90mm and throwing in a new set of 42lb injectors, but only because I need more fuel to feed my Vortech Charged setup.

I never noticed the 90mm & 24 # before, must be the ticket for NA.
Mike T. told me that 36# were good for modest boosted applications, but no longer readily available.

i used the 9100 superchips tuned by Mike, with dyno datalogging, i had a granatelli MAF before but it was not calabrated right and it made me run lean, so i ditched it and went the custom rout

No, you do NOT need any more MAF capacity on that 2004 & newer 5.4 3V F-150, you have plenty even with a supercharger, trust me.

It would not get you any more power in fact, it would reduce power, because all it is is a old-fashioned traditional MAF meter into which you place your CURRENT MAF sensor - there is one other arrangement, but both require very extensive custom tuning, and will not result in even 1 more HP on your truck, tbizzle.

Now there are SOME trucks, primarily the pre-2004's, where we DO advise upgrading the MAF meter, and we prefer to use Ford units where possible because they work right, as long as it's one that has even enough electronic capacity - but for the 2004 & up F-150's, don't' do that - there are other ways to gain more MAF capacity, and far better ways to get more power, trust me. We can take a 5.4 3V up to 450-500 HP and still run the stock MAF sensor.
