Anybody running an xcal2 with 4.6L??

Just wondering how much of a difference it makes with the smaller 4.6L V-8? I'm reading a ton of people who are happy with the programmer, but I've only found threads on people with 5.4 and 5.8L's.

yeah I've done quite a few search and haven't found anyone yet that uses the xcal2 on the 4.6, I've seen some other threads with people using other programmers & chips for(4.6) and they seem really happy! Welcome to the 4.6 club in a 5.4 world! good luck

Yeah I'm wondering the same thing. I have a 2001 with the 4.6L and Wondering what kinda inprovment the XCal 2 does for the 4.6. I know I'll be ordering mine soon. I have Magnaflow exhaust and will have the AF1 intake right away too.

Depending on you're computer code there can be huge HP and torque gains in the 01 4.6 Many of the computer codes will not alow the engine to go open loop at wide open throttle this realy doesn't alow the engine to perform well. Also there is a huge amount of drivability and performance to be gained from changing the transmission shift and converter lock-up sceduals. You'll think you have a differant truck after the tune.

There have been several 4.6 owners with the XCal2 that have posted their results in this forum. All have been very positive if memory serves

Talking

I've got the 97 4.6 with a flowmaster exhaust and AF1. I then put on 285/70/17's and felt a huge power loss due to the extra weight of the tires. I could have either gotten 4.10's for about 500, or order the Xcal2 from troyer. went with the Xcal since i wanted a new programmer (previously had 1715). figured it had other benefits besides just the three custom tunes! well it worked great. the truck is up and running very well, and you cant even tell the extra weight of the tires is there. that alone was enough to prove to me the Xcal 2 works wonders for the 4.6V8. i dont have actual times or tested results with the 89 performance tune loaded, but it does seem faster than the truck used to be stock. i'm sure if you were running a smaller tire the truck would move even quicker! just my experience with the XCal2, no complaints here, plus if you go with troyer performace, you get the awsome customer service and a pretty cool sticker too!

I don't have the XCal but I just got the 1715 tuner and I am happy with the results, so since the XCal is supposed to give you more horsepower than the 1715, I can only assume you'd be happy with it.

I just got my Xcal2 from TP a couple of weeks ago and haven't finished evaluating all the tunes. I was going to post something when I did. Let me tell you it's a different truck. I put some stock take off FX4 18 inch wheels and tires on it when I first got it and it was a dog. I didn't enjoy driving it at all. I then took the baffle out of the air cleaner and ordered the Xcal2 from TP. Now it's fun to drive. It is faster and more responsive. The thing I like most is the transmission. It holds gears longer and shifts harder. It seems like it knows which gear to be in to get the power out of it. I would highly recommend it, if you have the $$.

Everybody keeps talking about shifting being different with the xcal2.....but thats not going to help me, since mines a 5 speed manual. Mine shifts when I want it to.

Hey Darren,

No, what everyone is talking about is the XCal 2 and our Troyer Performance custom,m tuning - far more talk about that then talk about the transmission shifting, even though you will see some automatic owners *rave*& about how much better their transmission operates and it's overall shift characteristics.

It doesn't make one bit of difference that yours is a manual and not an automatic - your engine still gains the exact same amount of power. However, be happy you have a manual tranny, because with a manual you get even *more* of th power we gain in your engine actually delivered to the pavement. This is because manuals take only half as much power to turn as automatics do - so you will see more benefit than most other 4.6 F-150 owners see because yours is a manual.

The 4.6's don't' get talked about as much here simply because they aren't building as many 4.6's compared to 5.4's generally speaking. However, there is an even higher percentage of 4.6 owners who modify them, because they are starting out behind the 5.4's power to begin with.

The bottom line is simple - my tuning will make a very nice difference in your 4.6, just as you can see every single person who has already told you that same thing about the results from our tuning in their 4.6 F-150 is saying.

Your 2003 4.6 F-150 can't even go open loop! It takes custom tuning to fix that, and us fixing that alone almost doubles the power gains we get from those 4.6 engines.

If you seriously want more performance, the best bang for the buck is our Troyer Performance custom tuning - just don't think that tuning alone is going to turn a 2.5-3 ton truck into a pavement-shredding muscle car, as that isn't a realistic expectation - but what WILL happen is that our Troyer Performance custom tuning is simply the single best bang for the buck performance enhancement you can make, and that is why our tuning is so popular with F-150 owners who *every* engine, from the 4.2 V6 to the 4.6 & 5.4 V8's.

Good luck!

What papers did you send in? I was under the impression you just give them a call and give your computer code and answer a few questions. Are these papers on the troyer website someplace? I'm about to pull the trigger on an xcal2 myself. Thanks
