Passing Smog with a Superchips Tuner
Passing Smog with a Superchips Tuner
Being in California, I had to get my 99 smogged this year before the state would send the new registration. I've added a Superchips MT 1715, K&N drop in air filter, and a Magnaflow 15609 exhaust to my truck. I was debating on returning the tune to stock and did a search on the site to find out if it was possible to pass smog when running something other than the stock tune. Found a couple of old posts of F150's passing smog when using a Superchips chip, but none with a tuner. I was running the 91 towing setting when I took it in for testing. The truck easily passed.
Here are the numbers:
Idle 2500
CO2% 14.62 14.70
O2% 0.0 0.0
HC-ppm 2 1 (measured)
100 180 (allowed)
CO% 0.00 0.00 (measured)
1.00 1.00 (allowed)

It should also make you happy to note that those Superchips Micro Tuners are CARB-approved as well - so they can't be the cause of a smog inspection failure.
Normally what happens with either the Superchips tuning or with our tuning is that the vehicle actually produces *fewer* emissions at the tailpipe - it's a shame that far too many places are now just doing the stupid plug-in test, where they connect to the OBD-II port to see if there are any emissions-related codes without even bothering to see what the vehicle is actually emitting.
Congrats on your pass!
