KC I see your in NJ and since your a E-6 in the USAF you are probably at McGuire AFB. Where did you buy the truck? I have always brought my vehicles to Holman Ford in Mount Laurel for service... there EXCELLENT! Thats where I would bring it to get checked out as this shouldn't be happening. I can haul my boat out of the water and tow it NO problem.

I owned a 2002 F250 PSD and it towed great but don't expect better MPG as compared to the F150. I averaged 15 MPG without a load....towing my 5500Lb boat I got about 10MPG. The auto in the PSD's suck. My friend has a F250 with the 5.4 and he tows his boat without any problems. Also You should have purchased the 3.73's at least for towing. Change out the gears to 4.10's and you will swear you have a new truck and better MPG to boot!

I purchased my truck thru the Overseas Military Sales Program. I paid 23K for a loaded Lariat. The best any dealer would do was 30K. It was delivered to Holman on Rt 73. EVERY Ford dealer I went to refused to do the reflash or anything else because the truck wasn't throwing a fault code. Matter of fact, all of them gave me the *****ing bullsh$t line of "you didn't buy it here so we don't care". I've said this before and I will say it again... Ford dealers are the ABSOLUTE WORST I've ever dealt with of any car company in any location. Simply because of the treatment I've received from them, I don't want to buy a Ford ever again.

I realize that 3.73 or even 4.10 would be better for towing but I only tow maybe 5 times a year. I'm not going to get rid of the truck just because of this but I still think its BS that my truck can't tow a 3000lb trailer. I'm kinda wondering about your statement about getting better MPG with a 4.10 rear. That simply doesn't make sense. I chose the 3.55LS because I didn't plan on towing much. I get around 18 or 19 unloaded. I consider this to be good for a full size V8 truck. While I'm not happy with my trucks towing prowess, I can and will live with it because I like just about everything else about it.

I know the trailer weight is accurate to about 100lbs...
My motor is not blown...
No obvious mechanical problems that I can tell but I would not rule that out...
No I'm not trying to cause trouble... Are you?

If you are getting 18-19 MPG unloaded you have a 4.6 LOL! Dude there is no 5.4 that is getting that kind of MPG!
By the way, if you got a 2005 for that price you need to stop complaining, if your Lariat is LOADED you got it for about 5k less than what you should have!
Peace bro!

You seem very angry KC....to the point where your not rationale and argumentative. One statement your not buying another Ford the next your looking at a F250 PSD

4.10 would get better MPG towing since you would be in the optimal rpm range for torque and HP under load....why believe me though, it's not like I tow anything or have any practical experience concerning the subject Good luck....wish you well.

Your quote sums it up:

"I don't descriminate, I hate everybody"....words to live by

I have a 4X2 also and the VERY BEST I have ever gotten is 17.7 on the highway babying it along. But all are different, mine also has 373s so that could actually make the differance. Not really here to argue anyway because I love my truck, I have owned many different makes and this 2005 is by far the sweetest one I have owned.
Eveyone have a great week I am off to VEGAS BABY!

This not able to tow 3000 lbs story is just not holding up sorry…

When I had my 2001 F150 it had the 4.2, V6, standard. It was rated to tow somewhere around 3,500 lbs.

I didn’t tow much with it but a few times I pulled a friends trailer weighing 3,200 lbs. That was an accurate rate because we had it weighed at a scrap metal yard. My 01 with the 5-speed towed it with no problems at all. As a matter of fact, with the exception of taking off, I never really knew it was there.

I towed a 4,200 lb car on a tow dolly once with it and that too was not too bad to tow but I could tell it was back there, not by much.

So, there is no way I can believe that a 5.4 would not be able to tow a 3,000 lb trailer at ease. Also you should be able to pull it and not even know it is back there.

I have towed a 4,000 lb trailer once with my Lightning. I couldn’t honestly tell it was back there at all, not even during braking.

Therefore you really have a major problem with your specific truck that has nothing to do with the 5.4, transmission, or what differential gears you have so you need to get that truck checked out…

I would love to do just that but NOT A SINGLE Ford dealer within 50 miles of my house will touch it because:
1. I didn't buy if from them.
2. It isn't throwing a fault code.
3. I didn't buy it from them.
4. They say its perfectly normal to have the engine turning 3000rpm in 2nd gear to get up a 4% grade.
5. I didn't buy it from them.

You get the idea... Thank you for not posting an insult. I do believe there is something wrong with it. I simply don't have anywhere to take it... Like I said, I think Ford dealers are the biggest bunch of as$holes I've ever dealt with. I don't know why they can't act like the VW dealer I bought my wife's car from, those guys are great. Helpful and courteous every single time...

Apples and Oranges.

You purchased the VW from the dealer you get it serviced at.

If you purchased the VW the same way you purchased the truck, you may find the same 'cold shoulder'.

I leased three Fords through a local leasing company and ALWAYS brought my trucks in for service at Holman. Never did they deny service/warranty cause I didn't buy from them...never! What are you asking them to do....reflash for what? You have a tuner so a reflash would require the xcal to be reprogrammed. Basically you did reflash the PCM with the Xcal

You do not have to take your vehicle back to the dealer you purchased it from for warranty issues....Ford warrants the car not the dealer and they pay the bill. Ford has a Main office in NJ located on Dearborne Drive in Mount Laurel. It is located right on Rt 38 going towards Phiily before the exit for 295. Give em a call or drop by.

I'm trying to give you useful information but your responses are so laced with negativity and doubt I don't think the info is getting through. You pretty much have your mind made up..."Your truck sucks for towing and it gets lousy MPG"! Bottom line is nobody here can fix this...wish I could!
