What to do?

Ok I have done a lot of mods to F-150s and Broncos in the past. You know the old days when they had things like carborators and less wires. I just got this new one and would maybe like to play with it. I popped the hood and got lost real quick. I have never considered using anything elecronic under hood to improve anything. I live at about 5500ft and want to have good power and torque for off roading. Am I looking in the wrong direction?

Oh ya I have a 05 SCrew 4X4 with a 5.4L

I'll be living back out there around the end of next year man, in san diego now. Queen creek is an area the wife and I like, her family is already in Gilbert, Val Vista area, My brothers south phoenix like ray road over towards firebird and the casinos. Anyways a programmer is definately hands down the best single mod you can do man and requires absolutely no mechanical work, all you do is plug it into that plug thing underneath the dash on the drivers side like straight under your steering wheel man. If you dont really care about the price the xcal2 is a good choice, can do more with it like datalogging which is really cool and many other features not available with the superchips 1745. The superchips 1745 will cost you less and give you a great tune. 3 of em really. The hypertech also if you really dont care about price look up the hypertech HyperPac man that thing is rather new not even sure if its been realeased yet but it is really SWEET, but Im not sure if it has tunes on it as well.

There is a link to the HyperPac, now Im really not sure if it has tunes on it as well, its a new product and have only seen one review of it. So, my advice to someone who has not yet purchased a tuner is check out Hypertechs HyperPac and if you dont like that then go with the xcal2 definately man. Really now the 1745 although very good is you know "outdated", nowhere near the features youll get with an xcal2 or something like that HyperPac. Also, if you plan on doing some more extreme engine work, or any type of forced induction Id definately say xcal2. This post is long enough so I'll leave it at that.

Hi Rumluver,

Welcome to F-150 Online!

We generally advise starting off doing your mods in the order of best bang for the buck - and what will get you the best performance & raw power gains first for the least cost (in terms of actual amount of performance improvement per dollar spent) is proper tuning. The 5.4 3V has a lot of room for improvement in that regard, and to get the best results there, that is had with our Troyer Performance custom tuning - we have specialized in performance tuning these trucks for 14 years, longer than anyone else - so we are generally known as where to come to for F-150 performance (and sorry, don't mean to sound like a pure sales-hawk here, this is just FYI stuff so you'll know).

Take your time & read the posts here from other fellow F-150 owners like yourself who have spent their hard-earned cash doing mods - you'll quickly find that most go with our custom tuning loaded into the XCalibrator 2, which is hands down the best hardware to use - built in high speed datalogging, full enhanced-parameter diagnostics (not just generic OBD-II parameters), modular design to you can add options like an in-cabin touch screen, & so many other things. You also get a special discount from us since you are a registered member here at F-150 Online.

The key for performance in these newest trucks is not only maximum torque at *any* throttle position or rpm, but improving the basic throttle response. These 5.4 3V trucks are sadly lacking in basic throttle response from the factory, and our tuning makes a big improvement in that - it makes their drive by wire system (Electronic Throttle Control - there is no direct connection to the engine from the gas pedal anymore!) feel much more like you have a direct connection and improves the overall powertrain response as well as vastly improving the automatic transmission's shifting characteristics, etc.

To go over this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below, we'll be happy to go over all of it without any sales pressure, etc., so you can be fully informed & make your decision when you feel comfortable - and do spend some time reading what other have to say here, as there's nothing like hearing what other owners who actually have hands-on experience with these types of modifications have to say on how they feel about their results.

Thanks for dropping by, good luck with your new truck & best of luck whatever you decide!
