tuning questions...throttle by wire

I picked up my 5.4 F150 last night from the dealer.... and I can't say how annoyed I am with the throttle by wire...

Is there anything in the tune to change voltage/disable any PCM intervention in the throttle? I hate that the truck ignores what I want to do.

Cheap way - Go to the dealer and have them reflash PCM to latest update. For some this will solve (or at least help) the hesitiation.

Better/Not Cheap way - Call Troyer Performance, and get an Xcal2 with Mike's custom tuning... Totally cures the hesitiation, and gives a nice boost in performance & shifting.

BTW, you're bound to get a heap of posts saying to use the SEARCH button, because there are tons of threads on this subject... Live & Learn...

Doh, sorry about the lack of a search

Thank you for your input. I will try to get ahold of Troyer and talk to him about a few things.

No prob...

Also, I forgot to say WELCOME TO F150online... And congrats on the truck. Pics? Specs? Color? Whatever the model, you can't go wrong with these trucks...

Honestly, if all you're looking for is to cure the hesitation, I'd try the dealer first... It's free, and alot of people are having success... On the other hand, if you're looking for better all-around performance, Mike is THE MAN.

Well, I got the 2005 XLT Ext Cab 5.4 with all the towing options to make it tow friendly. I got the Dark Shadow Grey version and the color is realllly growing on me.

I bought the truck as a replacement for my 1994 Grand Cherokee for towing an open trailer (1992 Mustang Coupe, 351, spray, c4, weeee). I also may at some point buy a 20-22 foot enclosed so I wanted a little more comfort.

So far my impressions are good. I am not sure on the gas mileage, the tank was full when I got it (not sure how full). The car had 27 miles on delivery... I now have 168 and I am sitting on about 5/8 after about 90 miles of highway driving with 4 in the car.... How does that compare?

I know when I got my 5.4 2 months ago i was only getting low 13mpg, but i was constantly on the throttle. Try to keep the rpm's around 2, with doing that i get about 15-15.5.

Hi Little2V,

Welcome to F-150 Online!

Yes, we can *easily* give you a very large improvement in the throttle response feel, and we do that *without* disabling the "drive by wire" system, you really don't have to do that.

Our Troyer Performance custom tuning not only gets rid of the throttle lag that is inherent in these systems, but also delivers significant horsepower & torque gains, even on 87 octane fuels. We also take care of the very slow & sloppy transmission shifting, overall powertrain response,. driveability, towing capability & feel, and so many other aspects of power, performance, and most of all, sheer enjoyment of driving.

These new 5.4 3V F-150's are wonderful vehicles, but need a lot of help in the tuning department to give a satisfying feel - Ford has seen what we are doing, and they have a "reflash" available for the older versions that helps a very small amount - but it is nothing compared to what our tuning does, when we're thru with it it;s like night & day - spend some time reading the posts from other 5.4 3V F-150 owners like yourself who use our tuning, and you will quickly see just how much happier they are with their vehicles.

We give you a set of 3 different custom tunes set up any way you want & need for however you use your vehicle - low octane, higher octane, towing, performance, you name it - so that you have maximum flexibility and capability, all with significantly more power and better throttle response, etc.

Rather than sound like a cheap advertisement, just spent some time reading the posts here, & please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below if you;d like to go over this in further detail - we can easily make you *much* happier with that vehicle.

Last - never attempt to gauge MPG by looking at where the needle is on your fuel gage versus how many miles yo have driven - that tells you nothing in terms of MPG, as the first 1.4 tank always delivers more miles than any other 1.4 tank portion. The *only* way to know what your MPG actually is, is to fill the tank up, letting it stop at the first "click" of the pump (don't "top off), then drive the vehicle, however many miles you want, and then fill it up again the same way - letting the pump stop at the first click. Then simply do the manual calculation, dividing the number of gallons of fuel it too to refill the tank by the number of miles driven to get your actual MPG.

Best of luck whatever you decide, & congratulations on your beautiful new F-150!

Great Site

I will be calling here shortly Mike. I just registered as I just purchased an 05 SCrew FX4 this past weekend. This will be my first mod to the truck. From what I have read I think this mod alone provides a nice bump in performance. Great info on this site!

Thanks for the welcome guys. I placed my order yesterday and am now filling out the paperwork so I can fax them in. Most of my answers are "stock" since I only have 120 miles on the truck. LOL Looking forward to getting my tune!
