How Bout a Chip to Drop HP and Improve MPG

Stock 2005 F150 with 5.4l engine with no add-ons. By really 'Grandpa'ing' it I can get around 16.5 avg and about 18 on the road. I see lots of aftermarket chips and gadgets to get more HP. With already high gas prices and now Katrina pushing them farther, I'm curious to know if some company can or has already offered a chip to lower HP to say 225 which I assume would get me another 3mpg or so. And no, I don't want to try and trade in and lose about 8K in equity. 8K will buy a lot of gas. It's when we run out of gas and have to do without that I'll consider eating 8K or more and getting the fuel miser.

Gas milage is not a function of HP. dropping HP will not help milage, the two main components to milage are weight and wind resistance you (we) are not driving a brick we are driving a 12 inch concrete (reinforced led lined) block. A good tune will help both power and economy, although you will never justyfy the expense of the tune with the fuel savings. A 6000 plus # truck is not going to be a fuel saver. With all my mods and making excelant HP my fuel economy is much better , if you keep you're foot out of it, but thats hard to do also.
Enjoy you're truck for what it is or you have to down size. As you have said now is not the time for that, they will want to give you little for you're truck and want big money for a puddle- jumper, so you may as well enjoy the comfort and convience of you're truck as long as you can!!!!

Can you please post signs around the pool that state that the restrooms are in the adjacent building? Thanks in advance!

Hi kspair,

Actually, Ford already does exactly that in the 5.4 3V that you have - they drop engine power *terribly* in the low end and mid-range in order to force the ETC system to open the throttle up much further than the driver actually commands in terms of throttle position, in order to try to achieve zero vacuum and thus reduce pumping losses. This results in poor performance and lack of throttle response in those areas.

The reality is, what you really want is MORE power in that heavy vehicle, not less - when the engine makes more power, it doesn't have to work as hard, so as long as you keep your foot out of the throttle, you can see some MPG gains as well as get much better driveability - and performance when you need it. You will also have far better transmission shifting, throttle response, and so many other aspects of driveability are improved by our Troyer Performance custom tuning.

Another point - if MPG is ALL you care about, then you *might* want to consider some of our other modifications, such as our electric fan kit and our underdrive pulleys - the pair of them will get you another 25 Hp or so at the wheels as well as reduce parasitic losses and thus get better MPG at the same time - the same thing that adds the power helps with fuel mileage in these mods, the reduction of parasitic losses (the amount of power the engine has to use to turn those accessories) by getting rid of the stock factory fan and slowing down the accessory chain a little bit - a lot of F-150 owners have done those mods and love the results.

If you'd like to go over this in more detail, feel free to give us a call at our number listed below.

Good luck & enjoy your Labor Day weekend!

So with that thinking ZERO horsepower would give you infinite gas mileage! Wow, maybe if I just install a weed whacker motor in place of th 5.4 I'm good for life.

I think my 97 4.6 could use a better setup chip. The exhaust is black but passes emisions with almost zero numbers, I'm sure there is more unused gas getting through cause of the soot!

Funny thread, guys.

Hey uknigel2 - today's vehicles cause that, with the combination of cats, unleaded fuel & EFI the tailpipe soot is increased, and that does NOT mean that you are not tuned properly - that is perfectly normal. Things have changed dramatically from when many of us grew up - used to be, if the tailpipe was black & sooty, you *were* running too rich and polluting - not any more, not on today's vehicles.

Now on *stock* vehicle sure, you can always have better tuning, but it won't make a lot of difference in the tailpipe accumulations, it's jut the nature of the beast today with modern EFI vehicles in general and I know, it runs the opposite of what most of us learned years ago - just FYI.
