XCAL2 Question

Are you really able to smoke your tires with the XCAL2 Tune or was I just misinformed? I've got the 5.4 3V and was wondering about purchasing either the Superchips or XCAL2. I've been doing a lot of reading, and it seems like it'd be worth it to go XCAL2 with Troyer.

The Superchips 1714 seems to be generic programming, however the 2005 Superchips programmer seems more specific. Why? I have a 2004 so I'm leaning towards the XCAL2 but the Superchips has no wait time. What an awful period in my life. Sigh!

The XCal, with Troyer’s custom tunes loaded, will give you approximately 50% more hp & torque over and above what you’ll get with the 1714. In addition, since it is an in-depth custom tune done specifically for your trucks PCM code, it tweaks many other tuning parameters that make a big difference in the drivability of your truck.

Not to mention that if you were to sell your truck and buy another Ford product, your xcal2 would most likely be able to work in your new application. Try that with a superchip standard tuner.

Hi LosBanosF150,

The 2005 1745 Superchip tuner isn't any more "specific" than the 1714 Superchips tuner for the 2004's is - they are both going to do the exact same thing - and they are both finer for someone who is looking for the cheapest off-the-shelf type of tune that doesn't go into much depth in the tuning.

But there is never any substitute for what we can do in our *custom* tuning, as we go much further in depth than with any of those off-the-shelf_ tuning products on the market - to say nothing of our 15 years of specializing in F-150 tuning R&D, and having providing help over the years to other chipmakers, etc.

It all gets down to a simple matter of custom tuning versus off-the-shelf tuning by companies that make tunes for hundreds and sometimes even thousands of different applications - we specialize, and it shows in our results, which is why most people come to us for our Troyer Performance custom tuning in the XCalibrator 2.

Best of luck with whatever you decide,

I appreciate your response. I will be giving your company a call when I get back into the U.S. and on to roads where my truck will actually fit on. I look forward to doing business with you and your company.

You're very welcome, of course!

By the way, just one quick point, as I don't want to make a misrepresentation - this may seem minor, but the reality is that the Superchips Inc "MAX" series of Micro Tuners (like the 1714 for the 2004 F-150's) *are* actually "code-specific" to each individual vehicle's PCM strategy, so we don't call them "generic" even though some people do, technically it's really not completely "generic." When you plug the 1714 in, it will read that vehicle's individual PCM strategy, and then it makes changes for that specific vehicles' strategy based on which of the 3 different tunes you choose to install.

It's simply a matter of that type of tune being what we refer to as "off-the-shelf" - some people call it "generic," but technically speaking, it's really not "generic" because it is PCM code-specific - by now I've probably only caused confusion, but I hope I'm getting this across correctly.

The bottom line is, the reason our custom tuning gets better results is simply because we go much further in depth in these tunes than what a device like the 1714 can do - now for an "off-the-shelf" type of device, the 1714 does a great job - it's just that for those who want the best results, that is had with our custom tuning, and you can feel the difference.

Just a minor point, but I did want to explain...............
