Ordered XCAL2
Hi Kickin,
That *is* a very pretty blue truck you have there, from what I can see in the picture, excellent!
If memory serves, I think you spoke with Crystal, and you are the gentleman who recently had the automatic transmission rebuilt, etc. Nice to see another 1997 owner taking care of those first year then-new body style trucks!
Congrats on your XCal 2 & underdrives!

wow you're lucky... I can't even get an email response from three days ago.
Yup... pretty blue '97, with pretty smoke out the back - and no cats

You may want to change your front O2's, (if you still have 'em) after running all that Seafoam thru it like Bluegrass suggests.
. Wow - is this a new record for number of consecutive cans used?
Okay now - seriously, folks:
Question - how many States have relaxed their emissions inspections to the point of overlooking this type of mod, and more importantly, why?
Also - since this is the programming forum and I should ask a relevant question - what are the implications of the above, if any, w.r.t custom tuning?
And lastly - congrats on your choice of custom tuner - I'm sure you'll be happy!
Cheers
Vic

Seafoam smoke out the back and thats about it....
Its proably one of the best running 150,000 mile motors that I know of. Also, if you have a problem with me having no cats thats your opinion and if I am caught without them Im sure I will be fined and that is my choice, and I will accept the punishment.

Hi Kickin';
... don't go postal. It was merely an observation.
Having said that, I just don't advocate removal of emissions equipment for the sake of current, or future generations, but I seem to be a minority.
And, if you could share - you did this for what reason ( please don't say performance, 'cause you'd be mistaken).
Anyway - back on track.... how us old guys wander
BTW -You also mentioned in your post:
" The truck spark knocks very bad when running 87. Especially when towing.".
Tuning may not fix that. You know that, right? If it's knocking on 87 now, it's gonna be playing Castanets on a 93 tune
Good luck.
Cheers

It runs like a dream on 93. Mike said that tuning could fix the problem, but I think he said he'd have to drop compression. As far As I have read removing cats does increase power. Why is it that top fuel dragsters have no mufflers, or cats?
Now, Im confused.

OK Guys, let's calm things down a bit.
I'd like to offer my thoughts on running without catalytic converters - and please read this WHOLE post, not just the beginning part while will probably make some angry - read the WHOLE post, as by the time I'm done everyone will be VERY happy as I do offer an excellent and legal solution!
In short - DON"T EVER DO THAT!
It's a dumb thing to violate the FEDERAL (not state, as some claim) laws to remove catalytic converters on cars & light trucks in the weight ranges these F-150's fall into & pollute the air for everyone else - just so you can brag about having another 3 HP and also LOSE TORQUE, by the way - that is all you get on a 4.6 F-150 from stripping off factory cats, about 3 more HP, and a reduction in torque. On a fairly well modified 5.4, you might get as much as 5+ more HP - sorry, but that's just not even remotely legal or morally defensible to pollute the air for everyone else just to get another few HP. So don't even try to defend doing that, there is no defense.
Did you know that almost all state police cars and most local police vehicles n America & Canada (and Europe) are right now being equipped with sensing devices to check for the presence of cats on your vehicle which CAN BE DONE without even looking underneath your vehicle? That CAN IN FACT be done just driving down the road - Canada & several states here in the US have been doing it for YEARS, and a formerly prominent member of F-150 Online was himself caught by this up in Canada last year!
Not only that, but that WILL cause the PCM to (sooner or later) throw codes from the OBD-II system not seeing functioning cats - though we CAN turn off those rear O2 senors to eliminate those codes, we WILL NOT DO THAT FOR ANYONE driving a vehicle on the street. Why? Because it's arrogant to think that anyone has the right to strip off cats to pollute everyone else's air for another 3-5 HP and a loss in torque! It's also a $50,0000 fine for EACH OFFENSE, and your company is permanently on record with the EPA for having done so. So I will NOT do that for anyone. If you intend to run without cats, go buy a set of MIL eliminators, use them to flog yourself throughly, and then if they still work, install them on your vehicle to eliminate the codes.
Now here's the GOOD & FUN part.........
There IS a viable solution for nice guys running no cats - install a pair (2) of Magnaflow high-flow catalytic converters - you will NOT lose any horsepower at all, you WILL gain torque, and you will also clean up your exhaust tailpipe emissions to be in line with the allowable limit for that model year. Nice, eh?
See, cats put a tremendous amount of HEAT into the spent exhaust stream, and that helps to increase exhaust gas velocity - which in turn improves cylinder scavenging - meaning helping to evacuate the spent exhaust gases from the combustion chamber after the power cycle, and also help to FILL the combustion chamber with fresh air/fuel mixture during overlap - the period of time when both intake & exhaust valves are open. SO you make MORE TORQUE with cat that without them - period.
This does not cost much to do, does not make the exhaust any quieter (it will still sounds very cool, like a late-60's big-block muscle car), and will also now satisfy your downstream O2 sensor OBD-II tests all in one fell swoop - pretty cool, eh? This is EXACTLY the setup that I run on my low-11 second Lightning that products about 700 HP at the motor - and still sniffs perfectly clean at the tailpipe.
SO please - don't run without cats, and don't ask me to turn off the rear O2's in the tune, because I won't - there is too much to lose, for those of us who have ethics (and I think that's really all of us).
This is NOT being an "emissions ****" so to speak - this is pure common sense - you can actually achieve everything you want - a nice loud exhaust that sounds like it has no cats, get the exact same HP gains and LARGER torque gains, AND be legal all at the same time - that being eh case, who wouldn't do it?
This is NOT meant to attack anyone or to point fingers, gentlemen - we all get along here - this is simply some (I feel) very valuable info so that you guys running without cats can still get max power & sound, accomplish exactly what you want to do AND still be perfectly legal - and what could be cooler than that?!?
Just food for thought, so please don't send hate mail - I'm really just trying to help all my fellow HP-freak brothers!!!!
