Debating which Xcal2 tunes
Debating which Xcal2 tunes
Hey guys,
I ordered an Xcal2 from T/P last week and now am second guessing my tunes.
I ordered:
87 Tow
87 Performance
93 Peformance
In my travels over the past few days I noticed some of the gas stations in obscure places only have 91. This is not a problem on the performance tune but rather when I am towing my trailer. That being said anyone know the approx gains I would get changing the "87 tow" to a "91 tow"? Just debating if it would be worth it or not.
Thanks, Tony

I looked at it this way, you go with higher octane based on tune, but you can't go lower. Meaning, if you get 87 tow, you can use 91/93. But if you get a 91/93 tow tune, you can't use 87. I figured I'd probably have 87 in my tank more often when I needed to tow (out of randomness) than premium 91/93...so I went same as you but lower octane on the high.
These are the tunes I just ordered. 87perf, 93perf, 93tow. This way you still can switch back to stock tune if your using 87perf. And if you'll using 93perf and then suddenly you need tow something with 93 in tank you can switch to 93 tow. Hope this helps. I can't wait to try the 93perf
I just ordered my xcal2 today and went with the similar tunes, 87 performance, 87 tow, and premium tow(91 in my case). What altitude are you at in Canada? At my altitude (mile high) 91 is as high as we get unless we go to a specialty station and buy race type fuel. I don't race so I don't need more performance tunes. Maybe MT will chime in here to give his actual figures that youl'd gain with a 93 tow tuning.
And if he does.....I ordered the AF1 intake and XCAL2 tuner today, what if any gains in MPG or HP/Torque would the magnaflow exhaust (SISO) add to this setup? Anyone know if you can keep your spare in the stock location with this exhaust? I've read the instructions on a couple of systems that stated that you would have to relocate your spare

Well spoke to Crystal today I changed my tunes to......
87 Tow (Readily available everywhere for fueling up purposes)
91 Tow (Readily available everywhere for fueling up purposes)
93 Max Performance (Can find at certain gas stations locally)
Since the main reason for my doing the mods is better towing power, and from the sounds of things there are not a lot of differences between the "Tow" and "Max Performance" programs other than locking the torque converter at certain RPMS on the tow. So I decided to stick with 2 of the 3 being Tow programs and running them all of the time regardless if I was towing or not. Then the kid in me decided it wasn’t any sense getting the 93 in a tow program as the little outlying areas wont have 93 anyhow for me to tow with and that will be for “Fun”!!

I think your revised choices are better than your original.
Personally, I can get good 93 here so I went with
93 max
93 tow
91 tow
..............still leaving me with stock tune to burn 87 octane if for some reason I can't get better fuel.
With the heavy boat I tow around I need all the horsepower I can get.
If only I could harness some of the power of my 7.4 liter Mercury engine to move the trailer down the road............

Hi Ancient,
Don't worry, we have a *lot* of customers in your same situation, where each grade of their fuels is 1-2 points lower in octane than what we get here out west - and don't worry,. we cna still get very nice gains on those fuels!
If you think that's bad, there are some very high altitudes where their premium fuels are only 90 octane instead of even 91!!!
As altitude increases, the need for octane drops a bit, so in altitude-based situations, they still see the same *percentage* of power gains from our tuning, just to let you know.
