Xcal2 and switching between different octane settings

Hi,

I just ordered the Xcal2 programmer from troyer and can't wait to receive it. My question is I ordered it with the 87 tow-safe 93 tow-safe and 93 max-perf. If I run the 93 max perf for a while like a few months then I switch back to the 87 program down the line will my truck ping since it was used to 93 octane for a while?

Also for everyday driving would it be better on the engine and drivetrain to use the 93 tow-safe or the 93 max-perf? Or does it matter? I just dont want to do something thats going to harm my truck in the long-run.

Does anyone know the difference in horsepower and torque between these three programs? Its a 2004 fx4 5.4L 3v

Lotta questions but any help would be appreciated

Mike has never installed a tune that would cause damage to anyones vehicle..
Switch as often as you wish.. The only thing you "DO NOT" want to do is switch to one of the 93 octane tunes without that grade fuel in the tank..
Each tune will set different parameters on the air fuel, timing, shift points, and etc. for the particular grade of octane (I.E. 87/93/93) being used. Therefore the answer to your question is no, using the tuner will not cause any long term ill effects to your vehicle.
I am sure that you realize that to obtain maximum performance with any of the 3 tunes that you will have to go through a number of drive cycles with that particular tune installed, meaning that the more you drive with that tune installed, the greater the performance you will realize .Other than that you can tune and drive with which ever tune you so desire... Personally I normally use the 87 tow safe unless I know I will be wanting to maximize my power then I would have at least the 93 tow compatible tune in. I recently ran this tune in my #6000 plus 4 x 4 Supercrew at the drag strip and went 16.14 @ 86 mph. I have yet to try the 94 octane all out power tune at the track, but will indeed be doing so within the next 2 weeks before going the the FFW event in Bristol...
Good luck with your newly found power, you will be grinning like this

Take the time to read all the literature Mikes sends with the Xcal2. It answers all the questions you just posed and much much more.

Enjoy the Xcal2 it’s da bomb

Hi Triton 2,

Marc's response was right on the money - as long as yo have the correct fuel in the tank for the program you are using, no, you will not have any problems with detonation (pinging).

In other words, even if you used that 93 Octane Max Perf tune for 5 years - and then switched over to the 87 octane tune and fill up with 87 octane gas - no, you would *not* experience any problems, the power output just wouldn't be quite as much - but there would not be any problems.
